A complex system of fortifications with ditches, trenches and bunkers was built on both sides of the front line. Thousands of soldiers fought and died in fierce battles here, which is evidenced by the countless burials of fallen soldiers. Many concrete bunkers, impressive cannon and ammunition storages, and endless twists and turns of trenches built by German soldiers have survived to this day in the forests of Demene, Svente and Medumi Parishes of Daugavpils District.

Exhibition which is 113 sq.m. large consists of two thematic blocks. The first part is devoted to the events of the First World War in Europe and Latvia. The visitors can get familiar with the life of soldiers, with the innovations that arose during the First World War, as well as study what weapons were used by the German and Russian Armies. On the other hand, the visitors of the second thematic block have the opportunity to assume the role of a soldier and experience first-hand the everyday life at the bunker. An imitation of a Russian bunker has been created in the hall – a fragment of a trench with a small dugout, war attributes and soldier mannequins. A bunker of the Russian Army has been made because they were built of wood and have not been preserved to this day, while the concrete bunkers of the German Army can be seen in life by visiting the international route through the bunkers of the First World War. Much attention is paid to audio and video equipment in the hall with an imitation of a bunker as it gives visitors the opportunity to feel the atmosphere of the battlefield. Modern design makes the exhibition interesting and easy to understand for different audiences. However, more attention is paid to school-aged children, for whom visiting the exhibition is like a repetition of what they learn in history lessons.

The project is being implemented within the framework of INTERREG V-A Latvia-Lithuania Cross-Border Cooperation Program project LLI-501 “World War I heritage tourism route and expositions for attracting visitors to border area”

Latgale Zoo has a variety of small exotic animals on display – monkeys, parrots, snakes, fish, crocodile caimans, spiders and scorpions, turtles, Egyptian fruit bats, frogs, armadillos, iguanas and other tropical inhabitants. The zoo blends human environment with an animal world, so the animals can be viewed without disturbing their daily rhythm. Curiously that at the Latgale Zoo, animals also enjoy observing visitors and what they are doing.

In the zoo are no animals that were caught in the wild – those that can be seen in the exhibition have lived alongside humans for generations, similar to cats and dogs. The zoo also serves as a shelter for exotic animals – most of the animals seen here have been given away because the previous owners no longer wanted to keep them or did not know how to provide appropriate care. However, there are no Latvian animals here – encounters with them should be made in nature! The exception in the exhibition is the rare and protected European pond turtles, for which the Latgale Zoo specialists continue the acclimatization program in Latvia.

The zoo offers guided tours both in the zoo exhibition and in the Latgales Wetland Biodiversity Park and Wetland Trail.

The work of the Latgale Zoo comply with the laws of the European Union and Latvian laws that regulate zoos; three zoo functions are implemented here: ecological education, science and nature protection. The European Commission has cited the Latgale Zoo as an example of good practice in the successful implementation of the European Union Zoos Directive. The zoo’s biologists conduct research of international importance and practical nature conservation measures to preserve endangered Latvian animal species – among them are the European pond turtle, natterjack toad, European red-bellied fire toad and great diving beetle. Recently, a significant discovery was made, identifying a previously unknown reptile species in Latvia – the eastern slow worm. In order to preserve the nature of Latvia, invasive species – Chinese sleeper and alien turtles that threaten local ecosystems are also being studied.

In the yard of the Latgale Zoo, visitors can see a real hobbit house for insects and spiders and, after visiting the zoo, take a walk through the Latgales Wetland Biodiversity Park and Wetland Trail with viewing platforms and birdwatching hides, which can also be walked in the dark. The gates from the Latgale Zoo territory are open only during the zoo’s working hours, but the trail is also accessible from three other entrances with no time limits, although the trail is closed during the bird nesting period from March 1 to August 1.

It is the largest and most contemporary Latgalian Culinary Heritage Centre in Latvia, which offers an attractive story about Latgale’s strong drink that has already become a brand in Latgale.

It is possible to gain knowledge of the process of making shmakovka with the help of the latest technologies, as well as to look at authentic and impressive production equipment in the three halls of the exposition (with a total area of 290 m2).

Along with the story about making a drink, it is possible to look at old photos and documents in digital exposition, as well as to become aware of the most important stages in Latgale’s history. The exposition also plays an educational role because it informs about the consequences of alcohol consumption. Here you can see a set of modern equipment related to the food industry which is used in the preparation of high-quality shmakovka.

Residents of local and more distant neighbourhoods took part in the creation of the exposition and donated various things related to shmakovka, for example, dishes, tubes, “hoses”, various measuring instruments, glasses and many other, perhaps even initially incomprehensible objects.

The centre has more than 200 different exhibits, the oldest one dates back to 1890.

The Latgalian Culinary Heritage Centre offers:

To explore the process of making shmakovka in an interactive way with the help of the latest technologies. Information is available in six languages.

To look at authentic and impressive production equipment.

Guided tours in Latgalian, Latvian, Russian and English.

Audio guides in six languages.

Original souvenirs.

Shmakovka tastings (provided by licensed shmakovka producer – local farm “Sēlija”).

Daugavpils Church Hill is located a clear distance away from the city centre, in Jaunbuve (newly erected building) neighbourhood. This neighbourhood was built in 1865 after the approval of the land-use plan for then named Dinaburg (one of the earlier names for the city of Daugavpils). At that time, Jaunbuve consisted mainly of one-storied wooden houses. At the end of 19th century, red brick buildings started to appear as well. At the turn of the century, the population was beginning to grow. The congregations most of the religious denominations started to have more followers. The need for building churches appeared in this area. Martin Luther Cathedral (18 Novembra Street) was the first to be built in 1893. 1905 two more churches, the Daugavpils Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception (11a A.Pumpura Street) and the Daugavpils Orthodox Cathedral of St Boris and Gleb (2 Tautas Street), were built. In 1928, the House of Prayer of Daugavpils First Old Believer’s Community (16a Puškina Street) appeared.

Due to its amount of sacral buildings, the neighbourhood was named Church Hill. Church Hill is a unique place in Daugavpils. Churches of all four main religious denominations in Latgale exist within a relatively small area. This complex creates a unique panorama of Daugavpils. The churches became not only the religious centre of the Jaunbuve neighbourhood, but also its architectonic dominant. The complex of buildings contributes to the city panorama with its diversity of architectural styles, from Baroque and Neo-gothic to the Byzantine style. During the century the churches survived different times and political powers. The sacral buildings were destroyed several times, but every time they were reconstructed.

The fact that churches of all four different religious denominations have existed for a century within a relatively small area proves the inheritance of deep and strong religious traditions, as well as cultural and historical values in Daugavpils.

The Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia, is one of the 21st century’s most ambitious cultural projects in Eastern Europe. Located in the historical artillery arsenal of the Daugavpils Fortress, this multifunctional hub for art, culture and education remains an evolving and inspiring place for creative expression and experience.

The majestic exterior of the sweeping heritage building fully matches the interior design and the quality of art on display, where original paintings by Mark Rothko, a pioneer of abstract expressionism and colour field painting, renowned as one of the 20th century’s most influential artists, take pride of place.

In addition to showcasing Rothko’s work (and being the only space in Europe, other than the Tate Gallery in London, to have a permanent room of original Rothkos with up to six paintings on display), the museum holds four exhibition seasons per year, totalling up to 30 different projects across 2500 square metres of gallery space. These solo and group show projects trace current trends and developments in local and international art, offering a diverse and exciting range of experiences for art enthusiasts.

In 2022, the Rothko Museum acquired additional gallery space in the Martinsons House, a new cultural venue a few steps away from the main museum building. Besides a permanent display, The City of Dreams, featuring original works by the great ceramicist Pēteris Martinsons, visitors to the new extension can enjoy rotating temporary exhibitions.

Adjacent to the Martinsons House, the Daugavpils Fortress’s 7th bastion casemate has been converted into an open-storage chamber for contemporary ceramics from the Rothko Museum Collection. Displaying over a hundred artworks from 40 countries, the open-access solution, available free of charge, enables the public to explore the diversity of the ceramic medium and appreciate the artists’ creativity and mastery of different earthen materials (ranging from clay and chamotte to stoneware and porcelain) across multiple firing techniques.

Apart from gallery space, the Rothko Museum has dedicated areas where its educational and entertainment functions get shaped, such as a concert hall, a conference sector, residence rooms and studios, where artists are welcome to stay and work, and a children’s space, where kids can explore their creativity and be educated about art.

THINGS TO DO:

see a permanent display of original paintings by Mark Rothko and learn about his life and art in the Rothko room;

enjoy temporary exhibitions of renowned Latvian and international contemporary artists;

It is considered the last bastion‑type fortress in the world that has survived without major alterations and still retains its unique fortification system. From a bird’s‑eye view, the fortress resembles the shape of a sun or a star, while some observers see the outlines of a turtle or a bat. Today, the fortress is one of the most popular attractions in Daugavpils.

The fortress is one of the districts of the city of Daugavpils, which is why it is open to visitors at any time of day.

More about the fortress:
An equally important part of the fortress ensemble is its internal development. Around 80 buildings have been preserved here to this day, connected by ten streets, each of which still retains its historical name. At present, the fortress infrastructure is being restored, and its buildings are experiencing a period of revival. One such site is the former water lifting house, which now houses the Daugavpils Fortress Visitors Centre. The restored Commandant’s House currently accommodates the Latgale Regional Administration and the Daugavpils Department of the State Police, while the Artillery Arsenal building is used by the Rothko Museum. In 2023, the former Engineering Arsenal was transformed into the Centre of Technics and Industrial Design “Engineering Arsenal”, offering a contemporary perspective on the historical environment.

In recent years, several other significant objects of the fortress have also been restored. The Nicholas Gate, which in 2013 was recognised as Latvia’s best restoration project, has been renovated, as well as the wooden bridge that once connected the gate with the first riverside lunette. The guardhouse of the lunette has also undergone restoration, along with the rampart of the 7th bastion — a stretch of about 400 meters featuring casemates, which now house an exhibition of contemporary ceramics. A permanent exhibition dedicated to the renowned Latvian ceramicist Pēteris Martinsons — “Martinsons House” — has been created in the former gunpowder cellar. These projects have significantly reshaped the appearance of the fortress, making it even more attractive to visitors.

In 2018, the Daugavpils Fortress regeneration project was awarded the Council of Europe Landscape Award.

Construction of the fortress began in 1810 to protect the western borders of the Russian Empire in anticipation of the war with Napoleon. The project was entrusted to military engineer Major General Heckel, and in total, around 10,000 people took part in building the fortress, working continuously in two shifts. Immediately after the end of the War of 1812, construction resumed, and up until the beginning of the First World War, the fortress housed a garrison of the Imperial Russian Army. In total, the fortress could accommodate up to six thousand people.

In 1920, units of the Latvian Army were stationed in the fortress — specifically, three infantry regiments and one artillery regiment of the 4th Zemgale Division.

In 1940, the Red Army took over the Daugavpils Fortress. The previous garrison was disbanded, and the Latvian Army regiments left the site. During the Second World War, a prisoner‑of‑war camp for Soviet soldiers, “Stalag‑340”, was established on the fortress grounds. A Jewish ghetto operated in the bridgehead area, where Jews from Daugavpils and the surrounding regions, as well as from Lithuania, were brought. From 1948 to 1994, the Daugavpils Higher Military Aviation Engineering School was located in the fortress.

Today, the fortress is a city district with more than a thousand residents.

In recent years, the fortress has been developing rapidly and attracting an increasing number of visitors from Latvia and abroad. Numerous projects aimed at improving and revitalising the fortress and its surrounding area are actively being implemented. More and more families choose this place for walks, outdoor recreation, and photoshoots.

The fortress hosts a wide range of events at the city, national, and international level. Every year it hosts Museum Night as well as the European Heritage Days.

In 2015, a new tradition emerged in the fortress — the historical reenactment festival “Dinaburga 1812”. During this event, visitors can watch a reenactment of the 1812 events, when the French army advanced, and the fortress was bravely defended by Russian forces. In addition to the reenactment, the festival offers a wide range of activities for guests of all ages — both children and adults.

At the Fortress Visitor Centre, you can learn about its history and development, discover upcoming improvement projects for the area, and find information about future events. The centre also features an exhibition dedicated to the fortress, as well as maps and other tourist materials available for visitors.

During the active tourist season, the guardhouse building is also open to visitors.

In 2024, Daugavpils Fortress joined the Association of Latvian Castles and Manors.
