Public talk “Who’s afraid of red, yellow and blue?”

Date: 12.07.2019

Time: 14:30 - 16:00

Place: Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils

On 12 July, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will open a new exhibition of original works by artist Mark Rothko. The event will be marked by a public discussion and concert and attended by Mark Rothko’s daughter, Kate Rothko Prizel.

Three years have passed since the latest exhibition of original works by artist Mark Rothko was changed in Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. And now the current 6 original works will only be on display until 1 July 2019, so that on 12 July 5 other valuable originals by Mark Rothko can be unveiled with a special programme of art events and a formal opening ceremony.

The new selection of originals by distinguished artist Mark Rothko was selected from the private collections of his heirs, daughter, Kate Rothko Prizel, and son, Christopher Rothko. All the works will be new to the Latvian public. By established tradition, the selection will feature samples from different periods of the artist’s creative life.

The day’s programme will begin at 1 p.m. with a premiere recital of an original audio performance “The Seeker” – a synthetic blending of electronic and natural sounds by musicians Dace Straume and Kaspars Tobis. The new duo of musician, Dace Straume, and Kaspars Tobis, percussionist in the band “Dzelzs Vilks”, master of synthesizers and multi-instrumentalist, will deliver a first-time recital of self-designed sound motifs. Kaspars’ play on 4 synthesizers and 6 sound gongs will mix with Dace’s vocals and her play on Latvian kokle and several unconventional instruments.

AFTER THE CONCERT AT 2.30 P.M., THE PROGRAMME WILL CONTINUE WITH A PUBLIC TALK “WHO’S AFRAID OF RED, YELLOW AND BLUE?” – A CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH BETWEEN BRAZILIAN ARTIST, MARCO GARAUDE GIANNOTTI, AND ACADEMICIAN, DAVID ANFAM, IN THE CONTEXT OF MARK ROTHKO ART. IN ADDITION, GIANOTTI’S ONE-MAN SHOW WILL BE UNVEILED NEXT TO ROTHKO’S ORIGINALS.

The grand opening of the new exhibition of Mark Rothko’s original works is scheduled for 4 p.m. It will be attended by Mark Rothko’s daughter, Kate Rothko Prizel.
