First exhibition from the Rothko Centre collection opened in Poland

Last weekend, with valued support from the Embassy of Latvia in Poland, the first exhibition on Polish soil from the collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre was opened at the Creativity Centre of Targowa, Warsaw.

To commemorate the centenary of Latvian statehood, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, in cooperation with the Embassy of Latvia in Poland and with Polish multimedia artist Pawel Wasowski, organised an exhibition “Rothko Centre Visits Targowa Centre” at Warsaw’s Creativity Centre of Targowa.

The exhibition displays artwork by a number of Latvian artists from the Rothko Centre collection and private sources, highlighting the current role of textile art and sculpture in collection building at the Rothko Centre. Besides works from the Rothko Centre collection, the exhibition features selected artwork by Latvian artists Ingūna Levša, Baiba Priedīte, Māris Čačka and Ilze Volonte from private collections. With a view to underscoring the importance of the sculptural medium and strengthening international cooperation in art, the exhibition also includes large-scale bronze sculptures by Polish sculptor Stanisław Wysocki.

The opening ceremony was attended by Latvian ambassador to Poland, Mr Edgars Bondars and his spouse, as well as by other members of embassy staff. It was a special honour to welcome at the opening ceremony Mr Leszek Napiontek, head of International Relations Department at the Bureau of Culture, Warsaw City Council, and Mr Błażej Kieruzalski, senior specialist of the International Relations Department at the Bureau of Marketing. Meanwhile, Latvia was represented by Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre and Ms Ingūna Levša, chief municipal artist of Daugavpils.

As a result of the exhibition, talks were initiated by the Embassy of Latvia in Poland about potential future cooperation in the form of joint artistic projects between Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre and Polish Sculpture Centre at Orońsko, which would further promote in Poland the names of the Rothko Centre, Daugavpils and Latvia.
