Taste the History: A Culinary Tourism Exchange Trip between Latvia and Lithuania

Experience Exchange Trip “Taste the History”: Latvia’s Gastronomic Tourism Offer for Professionals from Šiauliai and Daugavpils

On June 26–27, 2025, within the framework of the project “Culinary Tourism Development through Modern Taste Traditional Lithuanian and Latvian Cuisine” / “Taste the History,” part of the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027, an experience exchange trip took place to explore Latvia’s gastronomic tourism offerings.

To explore Latvia’s tourism offering, representatives from four project partners participated in the trip: the Šiauliai Tourism Information Centre, the Šiauliai Technology Training Centre, the Daugavpils Technical School of Technologies and Tourism, and the Daugavpils Tourism Information Centre, along with representatives from food service industry businesses in Daugavpils and Šiauliai.

Over the course of two days, tourism and catering industry professionals from Šiauliai (Lithuania) and Daugavpils (Latvia) visited several gastronomic tourism sites in the Madona and Preiļi regions. During the trip, participants had the opportunity not only to taste local products and learn about their origin stories, but also to gain in-depth insight into the technological processes behind their preparation, explore the production equipment, and observe work processes in a natural environment. This provided a comprehensive perspective on the region’s culinary heritage and sustainable production practices.

As part of the program, the trip participants visited the organic farm “LAT ANGUS”, the cheese production facility “LĪVI”, the homemade wine producer “Domu Pietura”, the dairy farm “Lazdonas Piensaimnieks”, and the organic farmers’ enterprise “Juri”. Each visit provided a unique insight into the specific operations of the respective business and their contribution to the development of local gastronomic tourism.

The project “Taste the History” is implemented with the support of the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme, promoting cooperation and development of culinary tourism in the border regions.
