Date: 01.06.2021 - 31.07.2021
Place: in Latgale Central Library, Daugavpils, 22a Rīgas Street
Starting 1 June, Latgale Central Library offers an exhibition “City. Daugavpils”, assembled from the graphic art collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre.
The graphic art collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre contains more than five hundred pieces in different techniques by artists from thirty countries. Some artworks are gifts from the participants of major international exhibitions, others are prized procurements purchased from prominent Latvian artists, and then there are the showpieces of the collection – outputs of the International Latgale Graphic Art Symposium, a recurrent presence in the events calendar of Daugavpils for the past ten years.
The International Latgale Graphic Art Symposium has developed into an established tradition for graphic artists. This significant art forum promotes creative dialogue and artistic output by remaining a coveted meeting point for domestic and international graphic artists in Mark Rothko’s native city of Daugavpils and the broader cultural space of the Latgale Region. Over the years, symposium participants explore different topics as they craft potential futures, contemplate existing realities and address both deeply personal and broadly universal concerns. Still, one thing remains unchanged – the symposium venue in the city of Daugavpils, with its grand fortress and picturesque banks of the Daugava River, remarkable colour palette and complex historical heritage.
“City. Daugavpils” gives a small insight into artistic interpretations of the city, displaying predominantly individual perspectives of participant artists across five symposium iterations. Their creative ideas and artistic styles highlight standout features of Daugavpils cityspace – its distinct architecture, the upbeat streetlife rhythms that make up the city’s daily pulse, the unmistakeable outlines of the fortress and standard citizen behaviours. All artworks were made in Daugavpils and remain profoundly connected to their city of origin. The exhibition will remain on display from 1 June through 31 July in Latgale Central Library, Daugavpils, 22a Rīgas Street.
