Nikodems Bojars

Nikodems Bojars

A scientist, chemist, writer. Born on 1st of June 1925 in family of the Chairman of Daugavpils District and School Boards Alois Bojars and the teacher Elvira Adele Bojare. Nikodems Bojars studied in Zaķīši school of Vārkava district where his mother worked as a teacher. In 1939 he graduated from Daugavpils State Teachers’ Institute’s primary school, and the First Daugavpils State Gymnasium in 1944. World War II snatched a young man from his native environment: N. Bojars continued his education in Germany (University of Göttingen), and since 1948 he studied in the United States, where he gradually earned a bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degree over four years (1951-1955). During the years of 1955 -1956 N. Bojars actively explored the new nicotine compounds (circa 15 articles) in Princeton University, in Hooker Research Centre at Niagara in 1956-1961, since 1961 in Armor research center in Chicago. The scientist is the author of more than 100 patents.

Bojārs is an erudite scientist with interests in chemistry, astronomy, world history (and the history of Latvia first), literature. N. E. Bojārs participated in NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration) project of ultraviolet radiation resistant overlay creation, and in the research project funded by the electronics companies which was focused on high-strength plastic insulating substances. After N. E. Bojārs’s and chemistry doctor Alexander E. Vaijdu’s initiative NASA started to use in its space ships fire-resistant plastic seats, clothes and wire insulation, because the studies had shown that even an iron nail would burn as a sparkler in the oxygen atmosphere. Mr. Bojars owns the discovery of the white curtains that NASA used in capsules which explored Venus and Mars. His contribution to the history of Balts with the book “Baltic Civilization” is considered to be very significant.

Together with his scientific and educational work, N. Bojars wrote for the Latvian press about the cultural, political and public issues, published literary works in various new, experimental genres; he also wrote novels about political, scientific, and fantastic themes in English. During the 1980s-1990s he was working in the editorial board of the magazine “Trey Gates”.
