The Commandant’s Garden is located at the heart of the Daugavpils Fortress, forming one of the most atmospheric spaces within this nationally protected architectural and urban heritage site. Historically, this area served both as a parade ground and a recreation space for fortress’s soldiers, while today it is a historic park that unites military heritage with a scenic, carefully restored environment.

Following its restoration completed in 2026, the garden has regained its historical charm and become an inviting place for walks, relaxation, and exploring the history of the fortress. Several significant heritage sites can be found here, including the fountain‑monument, the wooden gazebo, and the Monument to the Fallen Soldiers of the 10th Aizpute Infantry Regiment of the Latvian Army’s Zemgale Division (1924).

A fountain‑monument forms the centrepiece of the garden, operating daily from 10:30 to 23:00 and bringing a distinctive atmosphere to the space throughout the day and into the evening. For visitors’ convenience, the garden also features a drinking water fountain.

History
The Daugavpils Fortress Garden has been developing in the middle of 19th century, when a parade ground stood in its place. Over time, it gradually transformed into a green, landscaped park featuring a fountain, a network of pathways, a wooden gazebo, and decorative plantings. In the early 20th century, several monuments were installed, and during the interwar period the garden became a popular gathering place, hosting military orchestra concerts and even a winter skating rink.

Despite the changes brought by the post‑war years, the garden preserved its historical character. In 2024–2025, it underwent a comprehensive restoration, reviving its original layout and landscape.

In 1924, a monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the 10th Aizpute Infantry Regiment and the 1st Latvian Riflemen Battalion was solemnly unveiled. Designed by architect Vilhelms Rīmers, it stood as a tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the battles for Latvia’s freedom. After the Second World War, the monument was destroyed and significantly altered, but in 2017 it was fully restored, returning it to its historical appearance.

A fountain has stood at the centre of the Fortress Garden since the mid‑19th century. The original structure was richly adorned with sculptures, lion heads and angel figures. In 1912, it was replaced by a monument‑fountain dedicated to the Russian Empire’s victory over Napoleon I’s French Empire in the War of 1812. Its composition features a granite pedestal, three cast‑iron cannons and a water basin enclosed by a chain fence. Over the decades, the fountain suffered damage and various alterations, but during the 2024–2025 restoration it regained both its historical appearance and its original operating system.

The wooden gazebo of the Daugavpils Fortress was most likely built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Designed in an eclectic style and adorned with rich woodcarvings, it originally served as a place for leisure and social gatherings. During the interwar period, the pavilion regularly hosted performances by the Zemgale Division’s military orchestras. Over the course of the 20th century, the structure underwent several alterations, losing part of its original decorative elements. In 2023, a restoration project was developed to return the pavilion to its historical appearance.

The Daugavpils Fortress Garden is home to more than 200 trees, with the most common species being Dutch linden, small‑leaved linden and Norway maple. One of the garden’s most valuable features is the well‑preserved alley of Dutch lindens along its perimeter, where the trees reach an impressive age of 120–140 years. Around the central square, several old horse chestnut trees also continue to grow, adding to the garden’s historical character.

The restoration of the Commandant’s Garden was carried out by the Daugavpils City Municipality as part of a European Union–funded project to preserve and revitalise one of the fortress’s most significant historical sites.

The creative workshop “A.A. Candle” is located in the Daugavpils Fortress and offers visitors a relaxing and enjoyable creative experience in a unique historical setting. Candle‑making artist Anastasia welcomes guests and introduces them to the process of making candles and gypsum décor, giving everyone the chance to create their own handmade item.

“A.A. Candle” specialises in natural wax candles, aromatic candles, and gypsum décor such as candle holders and trays. A special part of the collection includes “dessert candles,” which look like real sweets, as well as a series of natural candles inspired by nature.

The workshop offers creative classes for individuals and groups. These activities are suitable for birthdays, bachelorette parties, and small corporate events (up to 11 people).

Visitors can take part in the workshops and also purchase unique handmade souvenirs.

The workshop is open by appointment and offers sessions in Latvian and Russian.

The Baptist Prayer House is located in the Jaunbūve neighbourhood, not far from the Church Hill. Its construction began in 1932, and the official opening took place on 1 October 1933. The prayer house became known as the “Baltā baznīca” (“White Church”).

During the occupation of Latvia, the building housed the headquarters of the Workers’ Guard. In 1948, a cinema called “Uzvara” was opened in these premises, operating until the end of 1958. Later, with the establishment of the Daugavpils Medical College nearby, the prayer house building was transferred to the college’s use. In 1994, the Baptist congregation regained its church, and it remains open to visitors today.

The first “Caffeine” café in Daugavpils has opened at the junction of Alejas Street and Rīgas Street, marking the 29th location of the brand in Latvia.

It covers an area of 102 square metres and is easily accessible to everyone, including wheelchair users and parents with strollers.

“Caffeine” offers coffee prepared by the café’s baristas using organically grown coffee beans, along with a wide selection of drinks to suit every taste. The menu also features cakes, quiches, sandwiches, desserts, and salads made in the company’s own production facility.

Mežciems Park is a place for walking and relaxation in the historic sanatorium area in the Mežciems neighbourhood, which is situated on the picturesque banks of the Daugava River. The park is located 8 km from the centre of Daugavpils.

About Mežciems Sanatorium
The history of Mežciems Sanatorium began in 1883, when the Poguļanka water and kumis healing resort was opened on the banks of the Daugava River. Its founder was Count Jan Kazimierz Jozef Plater-Zyberk (1850-1922), owner of the Līksna estate. Since then, Poguļanka (the name of the area until 1937) has been known as a health resort.

The healing resort used a special drink called kumis, made from mare’s milk, therapeutic mud taken from the nearby Trikartu lakes, and mineral water. Kumis was made on site in Poguļanka, where 90 mares were kept specifically for the production of mare’s milk, which was poured into large baths to be turned into kumis.

In 1886, the Count established a steamboat route between the city and the resort.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a large water, mud, and air baths building, a kumis and kefir “institution”, an eye clinic, its own pharmacy, library, theatre, and much more. A well-maintained park was established for walks in Poguļanka, which was lit by electric lamps in the evening hours, as the resort had its own power station.

The early 20th century until World War I was the golden age of the resort, both as a health institution and as a magnificent and well-equipped place for recreation and entertainment. At that time, two steamboats and a motorboat already ran from Dinaburg to Poguļanka. Concerts and theatre performances featuring famous European artists took place here, as well as grand receptions hosted by Count Plater-Zyberk with balls and festive dinners.

After World War I, the resort was closed for a long time. The war had severely damaged the medical buildings and summer houses, and the situation was further affected by the agrarian reform that began in 1920, which meant that the Plater-Zyberk family lost the Līksna estate and extensive lands, including the resort.

In 1937, Poguļanka was renamed to Mežciems. In 1939, the building of the sanatorium was renovated. It had 27 rooms, where therapeutic mud and other procedures were carried out. People came to Mežciems for treatments from various cities in Latvia.

However, further development of this place was interrupted by World War II. From 1947, the sanatorium began treating tuberculosis patients and organising pioneer camps, and from 1959, it began treating patients with cardiovascular diseases. In the early 1990s, the Mežciems Sanatorium was closed.

The sanatorium territory today
Currently, the Mežciems Park territory is cleaned. The park is a great place for peaceful walks, exploring history, and enjoying nature. The historic sanatorium building and adjacent buildings, which can be viewed from the outside, give the strolls along the park paths a special atmosphere. The park offers a beautiful view of the Daugava River, making it a good place to enjoy nature in peace and silence. It is advisable to visit the park during daylight hours, as it is not illuminated in the evening.

Raiņa Centre operates under the Latgale Central Library and offers interactive guided tours and cultural activities. Visitors can explore the history, cultural heritage, and notable personalities of the left bank of the Daugava River in Daugavpils.

The centre’s exhibition is dedicated to three notable personalities connected with this historical school: the Latvian poet, playwright, translator, theatre practitioner, journalist, and politician Jānis Pliekšāns – Rainis; the botanist, mathematician, and philosopher Kārlis Reinholds Kupfers; and the graphic artist Rihards Zariņš, one of the creators of the Latvian national coat of arms and the author of designs for banknotes, securities, and coins. The centre offers guided tours and creative workshops for school groups, families, and adult visitors.

Permanent Exhibition
Raiņa Centre is located in the building of the former Grīva German School and Rainis Secondary School No. 6. Many outstanding personalities studied here, and their achievements in various fields have made a significant contribution to the development of Latvian culture and science.

Guided Tour “Different Times – Different School”
During the tour, participants learn how schools developed in the Daugavpils area, what characterised German schools in the 19th century, and which subjects Rainis studied. Visitors can explore the most interesting historical events and secrets of the school building and its surroundings, and take part in practical activities by tackling tasks from old school subjects such as calligraphy, poetry writing, rhetoric, or natural sciences.

The tour is available in Latvian, Russian, and English.

Latgale’s Wetland Biodiversity Park is a place that not only provides shelter for many rare and protected species of animals and plants, but is also an area that provides residents and visitors of the city with recreation, ecological learning and other ecosystem services. Moreover, it is located almost in the very centre of Daugavpils.

Daugavpils is a rare city in Latvia and even in Europe, which can be proud of a colony of seagulls, bog turtles, jackdaws, small pipits and other animals that live right in the centre of the city. That is why the Wetland Park can be safely called a unique tourist and natural object.

In the swampy area of the park, next to the Latgale Zoo, there is a Wetland Trail, which is about one and a half kilometres long. The trail is equipped with several observation platforms and shelters, allowing to observe birds and animals.

It offers two options for exploring wetland life: a leisurely stroll along a well-maintained trail or an explorer-style adventure route. It is possible to book a tour with the guide in order to explore the territory of the Wetland Park. Information about the tours is available in Latgale Zoo or by phone: +371 65426789.

The trail has several entrances:

•  at the observation hill – from the side of Esplanade Park and Kandavas Street;
• at the Daugavas Street footpath – next to the sewage treatment plant area;
• at the Daugavas Street footpath – next to the dog walking area;
• from the side of Latgale Zoo.

The trail is equipped with bicycle stands, information boards and signs providing information on possible directions of the trail.

A special trail, the Biologist’s Trail, is also built in the Wetland Park in Esplanade. It is a fascinating and informative route, which can be wet and flooded at times, with possible obstacles such as fallen trees, branches, animals and traces of their activity, as well as reeds. The Wetland Trail is suitable for mums with prams and wheelchair users. The exception is the Biologist’s Trail route.

A river-bank promenade was created on the right bank of the River Daugava alongside the fortress citadel in 2021. The total length of the promenade is around 1 kilometre, it goes on the upper level of the protection dam around the fortress.

The promenade begins in the place of a harbour where boats and floating bridge parts were kept in the 19th century, and ends near the historical water outlet where water is gathered from the entire citadel protective moat. It is possible to see the Fortress model in the harbour territory. In the central part of the promenade, everyone can see the original round-stone pavement that used to cover the whole protective dam and the passage till the floating bridge. Here also one of the historical wells is renovated that was used to pump water to the fortress water-main in the 19th century.

The fortress promenade is a great place for leisurely walks, to view fortress fortifications on both banks of the River Daugava, as well as to enjoy sunsets and slow flow of the river. A car and bicycle parking spot is available at each end of the promenade.

An environmental object has been installed in Daugavpils near the place where Laucesa River enters Daugava River – large-format letters that form the inscription “DAUGAVPILS”.
The letters were painted by the young artists and teachers of Daugavpils Design and Art Secondary School “Saules Skola”.

The object was created as part of the project “Art4Rights – Piešķirt vietai otru elpu – Iekļaujoša publiskā māksla – Pilsoniskās līdzdalības veicināšana un ES pamattiesību saglabāšana”.

The 7th bastion casemate of the Daugavpils Fortress is officially available in its new function – as an open-storage chamber for contemporary ceramics from the Rothko Museum collection.

Open storage is still underused in Latvian museum practice – so far, only a few heritage institutions enable the public to see their treasures beyond the normally closed repository setting. Open-storage facilities aim to give maximum access to museum collections that would otherwise stay behind closed repository doors and be mostly unavailable to the general public. The idea to bring the closely guarded museum collections out into the public eye originated in Canada in the 1970s and 80s. At the start, the new approach was called a radical shift and embodied an early attempt to move beyond the habitual museum practice. Today, this is no longer a new and surprising development. After all, the new museum definition has expanded its functions, lifting into the foreground accessibility to an increasingly broader spectrum of social groups along with diversified communication through tangible and intangible heritage tools.

The Rothko Museum’s open-storage facility displays a significant part of a vast contemporary ceramics collection steadily and purposefully acquired for no less than a decade. Its origins date back to 2013 when the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre held its first International Ceramic Laboratory Symposium, which became an annual tradition. From then on, the collection has been expanding yearly with the latest symposium output. Other acquisition sources are the Latvia Ceramics Biennale with its Martinsons Award and an eponymous international juried exhibition instituted in 2016, as well as some other juried exhibitions and a few targeted purchases. Professional curators have been attracting domestically and internationally renowned ceramic artists and achieving their representation in the Rothko Museum collection. At this point, the museum’s Contemporary Ceramics Collection has grown to more than 500 artworks, which makes it Latvia’s largest and most valuable repository of contemporary ceramic art.

The new open-storage chamber displays over a hundred artworks by artists from 40 countries. The open-access solution enables the public to explore the diversity of ceramic art and appreciate the artists’ creativity and professionalism in dealing with different earthen materials (from clay and chamotte to stoneware and porcelain) and multiple firing techniques.

The open-storage chamber is available daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The entrance is free.

Center of Technics and Industrial design «Engineering arsenal» is the largest exhibition of motorized vehicles in Latgale region. It is a unique exhibition space of retro technology and applied design, which is located in the historic 19th-century building of the Daugavpils Fortress.

Four exhibition zones with a total area of 2500 sq.m. await its visitors: «Industrial design and Special vehicles», «Soviet vehicles», «Moto vehicles» and «Western retro car» sectors. In total, the center houses more than 40 retro cars, more than 80 motorcycles and mopeds, a large number of accessories, car and moto-models. A special role is dedicated to industrial heritage of Daugavpils city. Together it all forms a story about the development of technology and design in the region, Latvia and the world in total.

Lielais Stropu Lake is the only lake in Latgale whose beaches – “Stropu vilnis” and Central Beach – are annually awarded the “Blue Flag” award by the International Foundation for Environmental Education for high environmental and quality standards.

Next to the lifeguard station, which is located on the Central Beach, a beach for people with limited mobility and people with visual impairments has been equipped. The beach is equipped with an automated lift, which allows people with reduced mobility to enter the water independently and return to the shore after swimming. To provide people with visual impairments with the opportunity to use the beach, there is a slope with handrails for the visually impaired and blind, which are coloured yellow.

There is also a changing room specially adapted for people with disabilities and a toilet equipped for people using wheelchairs is available at the nearby lifeguard station. Parking spaces for people with disabilities are available in the main car park, which is located next to the Central Beach and the promenade.

Daugavpils Fortress Visitors Centre presents historical exposition – “Nicholas Gates – a door to the past”, which is located in Nicholas Gates in Daugavpils Fortress.

Historically four gates were built in Daugavpils Fortress but only Nicholas Gates different from the others with their unique external appearance and the presence of side rooms. In the past, these side rooms were used as a guardhouses and short-term prison rooms.  But nowadays they have also found application. A souvenir shop and a Bat Centre have been located at the gates for several years. The other empty rooms of the gates were turned into a small historical exhibition where large number of artifacts can be seen. History enthusiasts will be able to find many interesting things there. The exhibition includes fortress plans, Soviet army uniforms, a collection of historic bricks and trim, historic windows and doors of civilian buildings and fortifications, and more.

The creators of the Museum of the World War I “Pie Komendanta” offer sightseeing tours in Daugavpils Fortress on an electric bus. During the trip, guests and residents of the city will be introduced to the most interesting and significant objects of Daugavpils Fortress and their history. The route leads through the streets of Daugavpils Fortress and includes such objects as officers’ houses, soldiers’ barracks, military hospital building, fortress garden, powder magazines, memorial sites, casemates, fortress gates, fortifications, and much more. During the trip some recently restored objects in the fortress can be seen, such as Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, Nicholas Gates, water lifting house, Commandant’s House etc. places. There are stops during the tour and you can go for a walk to see the fortifications of the fortress.

In total, 7 passengers can go on the tour at the same time and the duration of the trip is about 40-50 minutes. It is possible to see the places that are not usually visited by tourists. It is a very comfortable and compact car that is suitable for elderly people and people with special needs who find it difficult to get around the entire fortress on foot. It is also well suited for those travellers who have little free time, but who want to see as many places in the fortress as possible.

Music Square in Esplanade Rest Park is a place for rest and walks in Daugavpils. The central theme of this recreation and walking area is the sounds of music in an urban environment. This is very symbolic, as the Square is located directly opposite Staņislavs Broks Daugavpils Music Secondary School.

There are various music instruments placed in the open air that allow to both hear and feel the music in its various forms. There are 10 different musical instruments – drums, xylophone, tube bells and other interesting objects.

People in this unusual place may witness how music is born, and also create a beautiful melody. Both those who are familiar with music, and those who are just beginning to get familiar with the diverse world of sounds can make sure of the sound quality: sheet music is placed on the instruments in order to help to reproduce world-famous compositions even for the youngest music lovers.

At the end of 2017, the Lutherans managed to implement a long-planned project for the construction of an observation deck in the tower of the Martin Luther Сathedral.

The tower stands at a height of 5 houses, and the observation deck is located at a height of about 40 m. It offers panorama of the Church Hill. The Martin Luther Cathedral tower is currently the only accessible tower for visitors from all four towers of the churches of the Church Hill.

“RetroGaraž‑D” is a private collection of retro cars and Soviet‑era items, offering visitors an opportunity to explore historic vehicles and the stories behind them. The exhibition features 22 “Moskvich” cars, as well as a “Volga”, two “Zhiguli” models, and one “Mercedes”. The collection is considered one of the largest assemblies of “Moskvich” automobiles in the Baltic States.

A notable highlight is a car manufactured in 1947 — one of the oldest exhibits in the collection. Produced in the post‑war period, its design is closely related to “Opel” models, reflecting the technical trends and historical context of that era.

There is a sauna that is heated by burning wood. It is possible to order the services of a professional and certified bath attendant. The sauna lounge has two sofas, a table and a music centre. It is possible to make herbal tea with honey, lemon and ginger. Outside, next to the sauna, there is a warm, modern toilet with hot water.

Lielais Stropu Lake – the largest water body in Daugavpils, located 8 km from the city centre, attracts a large number of holidaymakers in the summer season. There is a 3,3 km long promenade along the shore of the lake. By walking along the promenade from the Central Beach to the left, you can reach the beach “Stropu vilnis”, where the adventure park “Daugavpils Tarzāns” and a camping site are located. The promenade along the lake goes to Daugavpils Regional Hospital and ends in Vecstropi neighbourhood.

The promenade is a 4.5 m wide asphalt path with separate lanes for pedestrians, roller skaters and cyclists and is illuminated at night. Bicycle racks and benches are installed along the entire promenade.

The main feature of the recreation area in Stropi are the two open-air swimming pools floating in the lake, located on the Central Beach. They are part of a unique pontoon structure comprising a 25-metre-long outdoor pool, jumping tower, children’s pool with integrated depth limitation base, relaxation area with umbrellas and sun loungers. The central beach is divided into zones. There are grilling areas and tables. There is an equipped children’s playground, beach volleyball court, parking, toilets and changing rooms. The beach offers a wide range of entertainment and recreation opportunities: summer cafe, electric scooters, electric bikes and go-karts rental, sports equipment rental for surfing. There is a fountain on the Central Beach.

The promenade of Stropu Lake is also accessible for people with limited mobility because of the pavement, which is lined at one level. In addition, a special recreation and swimming area has been created on the Central Beach for people with special needs.

There is a Stropu Forest next to the lake, Open Air Stropu Bandstand and Active Rest and Sports Track.

The most convenient way to go to Central Beach is by private car, tram No. 3 or No. 5 (get off at the “Stropu ezers” stop) or bus No. 3 and No. 12 (get off at the “Internātskola” stop).

Central Beach can also be reached by bicycle if you follow the regional cycle route No. 35 “Daugavas Loki”. The cycle route is marked with appropriate signs along the entire length. A bicycle parking rack is available at the beach.

“Restime Daugavpils” offers boat trips along Daugava River with a “Sikspārnis” boat.

The boat was created by the entrepreneur “Restime Daugavpils” from Daugavpils, who has been providing tourist services and offering opportunities for active recreation for several years.

The name “Sikspārnis” (“Bat”) is given in honour of bats that live in the territory of the fortress and are one of the symbols of Daugavpils Fortress. The boat “Sikspārnis” is decorated with various wood carvings, the bat as a symbol, there are shields on one side of the ship, the inscription “I love Daugavpils” is inside, as well as a Viking is depicted in wood carving.

During the trip, passengers can see the Unity Bridge, Daugavpils districts, Daugavpils Fortress and get to know the biological diversity of the river and its coasts. Passengers can enjoy a picnic on the water with food or a hot drink and admire the beauty of the Daugava River.

The maximum number of passengers on the boat “Sikspārnis”: 13.
Trips can be booked by groups for celebrations, hen and stag parties by prior arrangement.

The organised trips are planned at certain times from the pier which is located at Lielā street 55 (Grīvās side) to the Fortress port (opposite the Nikolai Gate in the Daugavpils Fortress area). The route can be changed at the request of the customers. The time of the trip – 45 min.

On the right bank of the Daugava River, in the vicinity of Gayok district the Bruģu Street promenade has been built.  It is aimed at giving the streets a new, functional look and meaning. After completion of the Bruģu Street promenade, Daugavpils city acquired a new, facilitated area for strolling and enjoying the splendour of nature.

The promenade on Bruģu Street is located in the street section from 18. Novembra Street to Ūdensvada Street, as well as on Dzirnavu Street  from Bruģu Street to Vidus Street, forming a 1.2 km long promenade along the Daugava River. Pedestrian and bicycle lanes have been built along the entire promenade, a new road surface has been laid, rainwater drains and street lights have been installed. Railings, several benches and bicycle stands have been installed along the entire promenade for the safety of pedestrians. Also,  greening has been carried out, as well as outdoor workout equipment for active recreation has been provided.

In order to make the promenade visually attractive, drawings with historical motifs of Gayok district have been created on the long concrete wall, replacing the old graffiti drawings on the fence along the adjacent companies.

The author of the sketches is Inguna Levsa, the chief municipal artist, who encouraged a group of artists-enthusiasts to create those wall drawings. Drawings occupy only a small part of the promenade wall. It is likely that in the future it will be supplemented by new drawings.

It took a year to complete the construction of the Bruģu Street promenade. The construction work was carried out by road construction company SIA “Binders”. Most of the funding for Bruģu Street revitalisation project was obtained from the ERDF.

The active rest and sports track is located in the Daugavpils Stropi Forest. The length is approximately three kilometres (1.1 km – elevation, 2.8 km – plain). The track is fully illuminated and it is intended for cyclists, for roller skiers, skaters, runners and Nordic walkers.

There are opportunities for skiing in wintertime. A ski track is available for freestyle skiers. The ski track is maintained by the “Stiga” orientation club.

Every day a lot of people come to the track to spend their spare time. The Lielais Stropu Lake, the hostel of “Dzintariņš” Sports Complex, “Chill&Grill” camping and “Daugavpils Tarzāns” adventure park is located near the track.

Medical exhibition with an exposition of birth control items is a permanent exposition devoted to the history of medicine that is located in Daugavpils Fortress.

Four large halls display objects, photographs and documents that tell the story of how people were treated in the last century and before. One hall is dedicated to medicine and medical care, the other allows visitors to get acquainted with the history of medical institutions that were opened in Daugavpils several years ago and are still working. The third hall is completely dedicated to contraception and various contraceptives can be seen here. In 2023, a new part of the exhibition was created about Covid 19 and the history of the use of protective masks.

The purpose of the exhibition is to show visitors what medicine used to be, how equipment, tools, etc. have changed. The special attention is paid to contraception in order to attract the attention of young people. They can look not only at the full range of modern contraceptives but also ask questions, talk with volunteer guides with medical education.

The exhibition was created by the Health Promotion and Education Society, the exhibition is based on a private collection that has been collected for over 30 years.

The narration is available in Latvian, Russian, Lithuanian and English. Audio guides are available.

Every year International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) designates a Blue Flag Award for high environmental and quality standards to Central Beach of Lielais Stropu Lake.

Central Beach offers a wide choice of leisure activities for everyone, for example, a pedestrian route for walks, which is illuminated at night, a bicycle path for cyclists, an open area for sports activities with the outdoor exercise equipment, a free beach volleyball court and other. For additional convenience, beach locker rooms, benches, parking spaces and other amenities are available for guests.

A unique lake pontoon construction is available for visitors of the beach. The construction consists of the lake promenade, the 25-meter outdoor swimming pool with 4 lanes, jumping tower and children’s swimming pool. Central Beach is suitable for families with children as the lake shore is shallow and there is a playground near the beach. Kids can play different games, ride slides and swing.

President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda and president of the Republic of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis have opened the monument which is devoted to King of Poland Stephen Bathory in Daugavpils on June 28th, 2018. The monument is located next to the Daugavpils Fortress – not far away from the end of the line of the tram No. 3.

Livonian Order Bishop Ernst von Ratzeburg founded Dinaburg Castle in the present Daugavpils District, in the territory of the Nature Park “Daugavas loki” in 1275. The settlement occurred around the castle. This year and the location are considered to be the beginning of the foundation of the current Daugavpils city. In 1577, Ivan’s The Terrible troop ruined the castle. After this event, Dinaburg Castle has lost its strategic importance and the building of new fortification was started at the place, where Daugavpils is located nowadays. During XVI-XVIII centuries, Daugavpils (Dinaburg) was incorporated into membership of Grand Duchess of Lithuania (1561-1569) and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1569 -1772). In 1582, King of Poland Stephen Bathory gave the Magdeburg law for Daugavpils (Dinaburg). Thus, it opened wider opportunities for the development of the city.

The clock, gear wheel and clock hands, which are depicted on the monument, represent the history of Daugavpils (Dinaburg) before and after granting the Magdeburg law and historical titles of the city. The bas-relief of Stephen Batory, his sign facsimile and short explanation is also illustrated on the monument. The author of the memorial sign is Daugavpils artist Romualds Gibovskis.
The initiator of the establishment of this memorial sign is Daugavpils department of Latvia’s Poles Union “PROMIEŅ”. First tidings about this initiative appeared in mass media in 2010. Then-President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski, who had visited Daugavpils in 2010, emphasised: “It would be good if this monument appeared. This would be an element that city residents could be proud of.” Poland has covered all expenditures on the memorial sign’s creation and setting up.

Stephen Batory (27th September, 1533 – 12th December, 1586) was Voivode of Transylvania (1571-1576) and King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (1575 – till the death, 1586). He ruled together with her wife Anna Jagiellon. According to many historians, he was one of the most influential Kings of Rzeczpospolita, who has ever elected.

Lielais Stropu Lake is the largest water body in Daugavpils that attracts many holidaymakers during the summer season. Every year International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) designates a Blue Flag Award for high environmental and quality standards to Central Beach of Lielais Stropu Lake.

Central Beach of Lielais Stropu Lake offers a wide choice of leisure activities for everyone, for example, a pedestrian route for walks, which is illuminated at night, a bicycle path for cyclists, an open area for sports activities with the outdoor exercise equipment, a free beach volleyball court and other. On November 14, 1924, in the garden of the Daugavpils Fortress, a monument of remembrance to 44 soldiers of the 10th Aizpute Infantry Regiment of Zemgale Division, who died in the Latvian War of Independence, was unveiled. On the side planes of the monument there were two granite plates with the following text: “To the 10th Aizpute Infantry Regiment soldiers and soldiers of the former 1st riflemen Regiment fallen in liberation fights in 1918-1920” and regiment’s slogan “Your nation will not die when you die for the nation”. The project of the monument was designed by the engineer V. Riemer. The monument was unveiled by the Deputy Minister of War Kārlis Ezeriņš. During the Soviet period the monument was destroyed. After 1944, it initially served as a pedestal for the Stalin’s monument bust. In 1950s Stalin’s bust was replaced with the Lenin’s bust, but later the monument was relocated. Since then, all these years only a fragment of the destroyed monument was visible in the Fortress garden. On 2017 the monument has been restored to its original state. With an official opening ceremony the restored monument was unveiled on November 14, 2017.

The monument was unveiled in 2017 in Jātnieku Street Square. The monument commemorates those who died in Afghanistan War. Author of the monument project Romualds Gibovskis created it as a half-open wall that symbolizes life ruptured by war and death. The other part of the wall displays 9 silhouettes – 9 young boys from Daugavpils and its surroundings who died in war. At the foot of the monument there are 9 weapon shells, which serve also as flower vases. From 1979 to 1989, 3640 soldiers from Latvia were sent to war in Afghanistan.177 soldiers were seriously injured, 1 – disappeared without a trace, 63 – died. 16 of the fallen were from Latgale.

Pursuant to an order of 15 July 1941 all Jews had to move to the ghetto – a fortification on the left bank of the Daugava River. The majority of those imprisoned in the ghetto Jews from Daugavpils; however, later a couple of thousand Jews from towns and rural areas in the vicinity were driven here – from Krāslava, Grīva, Višķi, Indra, Kārsava, Dagda, Ilūkste district and other places (also from Lithuania). In total approximately 15 000 to 20 000 Jews were placed in the ghetto, of which less than 100 persons survived. A part of Daugavpils ghetto prisoners, who were shot in the Mežciems Forest, have been reinterred in the Daugavpils Communal Cemetery, their remains were found in the 1950s. During the first post–war years the reinterment site was in the Old Jewish Cemetery, but in the 1970s, when the Cemetery was liquidated, the monument was moved to the Communal Cemetery. There is an inscription in Russian and Yiddish on the monument: “Here  Jewish families rest, shot by Hitler’s executioners in 1941–1945”.

In 1974 a memorial stone was placed, its inscription in Russian sates: “In this place on 8–9.11 1941 German fascists shot 2000 civilians – children and adults”.

In total approximately 15 000 to 20 000 Jews were placed in the ghetto, of which less than 100 persons survived. From July 1941 to the end of 1943 in the Mežciems (historical name – Poguļanka) Forest Jews, taken from Daugavpils ghetto at various times, were shot here. The exact number of victims is unknown. In 1960 a memorial (sculptor Harijs Sprincis, architect Zigurds Ābelīte) to the victims of Nazism was unveiled in the Mežciems Forest; however, the most part of the monument was destroyed in the 1990s. On 9 July 1989 Jewish activists from Daugavpils reinterred the remains that had been found at the end of the 1980s in Mežciems in separate pits. In 2007 the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia placed on the site two black granite plaques with an inscription in Latvian, Russian, English and Hebrew: “The remains of prisoners of the Daugavpils ghetto are buried here”.

The Memorial Plaque to Rabbi Abraham Isaac  Kook (1865 – 1935) was opened on March 7, 2013 on the wall of the Daugavpils Synagogue. Rabbi Abraham Isaac  Kook was born in Grīva (now Daugavpils). He was the outstanding Jewish religious thinker and public figure, the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the land of Israel.

Museum of the World War I “Pie Komendanta” is the only museum of its kind in Latgale. The exposition is located in a historical building, built in 1860. A collection of original items and documents, which reflects the everyday life of World War I can be seen at the exhibition. The old photos tell the story about the period of World War I and reflect the events that took place in Daugavpils and around it.

The exposition of the old post office and exhibition of old irons can be seen in the second part of the museum.  The museum also offers tours to the battlefields of World War I (prior agreement on the time of the tour is required). During the tour, it is possible to learn about the city of Dvinsk as the scene of military operations in 1914-1918.

Adventure park “Daugavpils Tarzāns” is located near the Stropu Lake in Daugavpils. The obstacle park is a great adventure for both children and adults.

The park is made of 8 obstacle tracks with different degrees of difficulty.  The green track is an adventure track for children with 16 different obstacles. For adults this will be a proper warm-up before going up higher. The two blue tracks are created with relatively easy to overcome obstacles raised up to five meters above the ground. The red track is set 10 m above the ground and includes a jump in the net with “Tarzāns” rope, flying skateboard and other exciting obstacles. The black track suits for those who seek challenges. This track requires physical strength and coordination since there are 14 high-intensity obstacles that are placed 12 m above the ground.

The adventure park is equipped with the new generation security system “Speedrunner” from the Swiss company “Kanopeo”. The most important benefit of the new system is that it prevents risk of unfastened safety belts. Continued connection with safety cable throughout the track ensures a safe adventure.

In 2019, a new track was opened in the adventure park – a net route. The net route offers an amazing new way of enjoying activities at the height of 7m, manoeuvring through the nets, jumping or relaxing. The ball field is interesting for both children and adults. Unlike the obstacle park, you will be completely surrounded by 2.5m high net walls, which means you can enjoy a fun adventure with the whole family, friends or a team.

Esplanade Rest Park is the first bike park in the Baltics covering an area of 4 hectares in the urban environment. This park includes a variety of areas – a skatepark, an asphalted cycling track, an adventure trail and a children’s area. The park is multifunctional and is adapted for 8 different vehicles – mtb, bmx, street, balance bike, skateboard, longboard, roller skates and scooter. There are many walking trails so this park is accessible to both locals and city guests.

A skatepark is a reinforced concrete structure. A visual and functional solution of the skatepark goes hand in hand with the city overview. Each edge of the stucture delights park users.

The cycling track is the place for active rest and it is adapted for cyclists of all ages and cycling levels. This is specially constructed asphalt track that consist of the mounds of various sizes, turns and small jumps. The cycling track can be seen freely from any point so there is no risk of collision. There is soft lawn around the track.

The children’s cycling track is similar to cycling track for adults however only in smaller sizes. The height of the mounds is less than 30 cm, they are gentle and suitable for children’s level.

Daugavpils offers to enjoy a special atmosphere by taking a ride around the city on a tram manufactured at the Riga Carriage Factory at the end of the last century. The tram is equipped with tables, curtains and has 24 seats.
The tour lasts about an hour and is a good alternative for tourist groups to the classic city tour, because in less than an hour you can travel around the city and get introduced to its history and cultural and historical objects. During the trip you will be able to see the most remarkable places of Daugavpils: the historical centre, Daugavpils Fortress, Church Hill, as well as other sights and neighbourhoods of the city.

There are 2 retro trams available:
– Tram No. 65, suitable for groups of up to 24 people, equipped with 8 tables
– Tram No. 61, suitable for groups of up to 36 people, without tables

The tour lasts about an hour and is an excellent alternative to a classic city tour, allowing groups to explore the city and get acquainted with its history and cultural landmarks in less than 60 minutes.

During the ride, visitors can enjoy views of Daugavpils’ most notable landmarks, including the historical centre, Daugavpils Fortress, Church Hill, and several other sights and neighbourhoods.

The tram runs along the public transport route. You can start and end the tour at any tram stop, for example, at the stop “Vienības nams” (in the city centre, on the main town square) or at the stop “Daugavpils cietoksnis” (the tram stop near Daugavpils Fortress). There are 5 tram routes in Daugavpils. “Bunker” gallery is located in the basement of an apartment building in the authentic Soviet-era bunker with the heavy original metal door. There are more than 300 exhibits that belongs to different periods of history: the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, World War I and World War II, Latvia’s first independence period and Soviet time. There are various exhibits in the gallery – maps, posters, gas masks, different types of remedies, special clothing, radiation measuring instruments and other items that displays a theme of Civil Defense. Every one can explore various exhibits of so-called post-Soviet modernism: diplomas, flags of labor collectives, pennants as well as certificates, passports of the USSR citizens, bonds etc.

There are ancient maps, postcards, newspapers, banknotes and coins. There are also different communication tools – Morse apparatus, telephone sets, payphones and telegraph apparatus. Abacus, calculating machines, radio, pumps, badges, street plates, different types of clothing including student uniforms – all these every one can see in the rich collection of the gallery. The busts of Soviet leaders, brought from abroad and different places of Latvia, makes this collection very appealing. There are also very rare exemplars in the gallery – various items that were used by the staff of the State Security Committee (KGB) and even a gas mask for the horse.

Daugavpils Bat Centre offers both day and night excursions during the summer season (May – September) because it is prohibited to disturb bats over the winter. The tours are held in order to explore the bats, to find out what they eat, how they hibernate and breed, as well as where they live. The exhibition takes place in the lobby on the 2nd floor of Daugavpils University (DU) building, Vienibas iela 13. The album itself is a property of Vatican Library, it was presented to the Pope Leo XIII in 1888 by the inhabitants of the Baltic region as a gift on the 50th anniversary of the Pope’s ordination.

The album “Terra Mariana” narrates about the spreading of Christianity in Livonia (nowadays territory of Latvia and Estonia), which also was called the Land of Maria (Terra Mariana), or the Land of Mara. The album contains a plenty of visual and textual information about the Livonian castles, ruins, churches, seals and coats of arms of Livonian nobility, historical figures, as well as the imprints of golden and silver coins. The illustrations are explained by the texts in Latin language, written in Old Gothic church style. The author of the album is Latgalian historian Gustav von Manteuffel. The album is a very important source of knowledge about the Latgalian cultural and historical heritage.

This unique issue is placed into a showcase, but you can use an interactive stand right next to it and leaf through the electronic version of the album.

The tradition of shmakovka production has been alive in Latgale for many centuries.

It is the largest and most contemporary Latgalian Culinary Heritage Centre in Latvia, which offers an attractive story about Latgale’s strong drink that has already become a brand in Latgale.

It is possible to gain knowledge of the process of making shmakovka with the help of the latest technologies, as well as to look at authentic and impressive production equipment in the three halls of the exposition (with a total area of 290 m2).

Along with the story about making a drink, it is possible to look at old photos and documents in digital exposition, as well as to become aware of the most important stages in Latgale’s history. The exposition also plays an educational role because it informs about the consequences of alcohol consumption. Here you can see a set of modern equipment related to the food industry which is used in the preparation of high-quality shmakovka.

Residents of local and more distant neighbourhoods took part in the creation of the exposition and donated various things related to shmakovka, for example, dishes, tubes, “hoses”, various measuring instruments, glasses and many other, perhaps even initially incomprehensible objects.

The centre has more than 200 different exhibits, the oldest one dates back to 1890.

Museum “Jews in Daugavpils and Latgale” is located on the 2nd floor of the Daugavpils synagogue. The museum exposition tells about Jewish life and living traditions in Latgale and Daugavpils since 1900. The exposition represents the change in the number of Jews, sibling’s stories in photos, household and religious items as well as a variety of publications: magazines, calendars and books about Jews life in Daugavpils and Latgale.

Ethnographer Joseph Rochko provides every guest of Daugavpils city and interested people with the opportunity to get acquainted with the synagogue and exposition, to learn interesting and amazing stories about local Jewish families, historical aspects of Jewish life, worship traditions, the role of the altar of the synagogue etc. The visitors of the exposition and the synagogue can donate something to the synagogue, booking in advance by phone or e-mail.

In 1850 Dinaburg residents turned to Polotsk and Vitebsk bishop Vasilij with a request to permit the building of Orthodox Church in the city. The permission was received and the new church was consecrated in 1877. In 1964 The Soviets closed it. Until 1991 there was a library in the church building. The church regained it in a very poor condition. It was necessary to replace the roof, place a cupola, make repairs and to replace the window frames. In 2007 the first divine service took place in the renovated church.

The Old-believer’s community in Niderkuni was founded in the late 19th century. The permission to build the prayer house was received after the Directive “On Toleration”. The senator Harjakin gave the land to the community and he also gave the credit for building materials. 2,000 rubles were collected with the help of the donations from private persons.

Old-believer’s Prayer House in Niderkuni was built in 1907, but in 1908 – 1911 work on the interior design was carried out. The parishioners presented icons and books to the new church. The icons painted by Konstantin Pavlov, Vasilij Kirillin, Barbara Kirillina and Leontij Seleznev have remained in the iconostasis till nowadays.

In 1930 – 1935 it was necessary to strengthen the construction of the roof and for this purpose four columns were placed in the chapel room. In 1930 Old Believers’ Song community department of Griva and Niderkuni worked in the church under the leadership of F.Fadeev. The divine services continued all the time in the church. In 2000, Daugavpils City Council has allocated funds to repair the bell tower and crosses. The builders of the church repeated in brick the traditional forms of Old Believers’ prayer houses in Daugavpils region. A single volume with a gable roof for four windows with a small bell tower that is covered with a canopy and that “grows” out of the roof, the head of the pulpit, the cantilevered canopy over the porch – everything is simple, but strictly canonical. The interior of the church is decorated with a rich four-tiered iconostasis, a beautiful chandelier and with the icons in icon cases. The overlap over the hall is designed in the shape of an arch, the wooden structure of which is entered in the roof volume.

St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Griva was consecrated in 1924. The project author is Vladimir Shervinski. The wooden carvings are the characteristic feature of the church: they decorate the rooms and the lobby roof corices, the entrance façade top part, the tower cornices, as well as the bell tower. There are icons in the church, which dates back to the late 17th century.

Old-believer’s Prayer House of The Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God and Nicholas the Wonderwoker in Gajok.  Old Believers settled in the wood area on the right bank of the river Daugava (now the Daugavpils district – Gajok) long time ago. When in 1883 the law that allowed Old Believers to build their chapels without external signs of the cult was passed, the merchant Kondratij Molchanov donated some his land for the prayer house building. Ivan Molchanov, his son, worked on that case. He had to go with the petitions to the provincial city Vitebsk and even to St. Petersburg. In 1884, the permission for the building was obtained. The church was built on the money that was donated by citizens; they were merchant G.Vasilev, families Astratov, Kapustin, Trifonov and others. Kondratij Molchanov donated money for the icons and for the church plate.

On March 30 in 1886 the church was consecrated. The project of the church has remained. It was a well made and elegant one-story stone building with a gable roof with a vestibule and with a square hall in the plan. The eastern and western parts of the building were marked with risalits with pediments on the south and north facades. The walls were crowned with an arched frieze. The building did not have signs of the cult. This part of the chapel remained without any modifications till nowadays.

20 years later, in 1906, after the proclamation of the directive “On the strengthening of the tolerance sources”, a temporary wooden bell tower for 5 bells was added to the church and a small head was placed on the roof. By Easter in 1907, a new brick bell tower had been built, it had two octagonals on a high tchetverik, a large cupola and decorations in a shape of corbel arches. The architecture of the bell tower was masterfully linked with the shapes of the former chapel. The church was one of the most beautiful religious buildings in Daugavpils. The hand of a professional is clearly seen in the architectural shapes of the church. The prototype of the stone bell tower in Gajok, as well as the prototype of the high bell tower of Riga church of Grebenshchikov community can be seen in the famous Ivan the Great of the Kremlin in Moscow. It is interesting that Riga bell tower was built a year earlier, in 1906, according to the project of the architect Alexander Schmeling. The bell tower in Gajok is smaller in scale, but the forms of the two bell towers are quite similar, as if they are “made in the same handwriting.” It is possible to assume the authorship of the well-known Riga architect in this case.

The WWI broke out. In 1915 the bells and church plate were evacuated to Russia. In 1922 the church was greatly damaged by the floods. The parishioners remembered about the lost bells when they began to rebuild the church. In 1929, a meeting was held between two communities from Gajok and from Old Fortstadt, where it was agreed to send delegates to Soviet Russia to search for the evacuated property. The Soviet government contributed to the search. Authorized K.Volosov and D.Hutelionok found the church plate of the church (according to different sources – in Vladimir province of town Gorohovec or in town Krasnij). They managed to get other bells instead of the lost ones, among them there was a bell poured in 1756 for the church of the Three Saints that is located at the Red Gate in Moscow, this large bell weights 64 poods and 30 pounds (tons). The returned bells and the church plate were consecrated on April 26 in 1929.

In 1941, during the Germans invasion the church burned down. Only a few books and icons were saved. The divine services continued in the remained house near the church. In 1947, the church was rebuilt again.

The interior of the church is traditional. The hall of the chapel is overlapped with a wooden arch that is inscribed in the structure of the roof. There are choirs in the western part. The three-storey iconostasis is made up of a number of different icons.

In 1921, permission was received to relocate to the Old Suburb of Daugavpils a church that had stood until then in the army range, about 1 km away. The city of Daugavpils granted land and the Cemetery board of the Daugavpils Orthodox Churches provided the required additional timber. By 1923, the church had been relocated and in 1929 the foundation stone was laid. Construction work was carried out under the supervision  of building engineer I. Fiodorov, and in 1934 the church was completed and consecrated.

The aisleless wooden church is rectangular in plan, with a polygonal apse. It has two towers: a bell tower above the entrance and smaller tower at the east end.

The icons date from 1833 up to the earl 20th century, one group of them brought from Moscow.

Saint Peter’s in Chains Roman Catholic Church is located at 39 Rigas Street. Built in 1848–1849, rebuilt in 1924–1934. The architecture of the church has certain features of Classicism. It has some resemblance to Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican. The main dome of the white church is supported by four double pillars.

Consecrated in 2004. Located in A. Pumpurs public garden (20 Saules Street) on the former site of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (1864–1961). In Soviet times, in 1961, the cathedral was closed and in 1969 – demolished. The chapel is a memorial structure that has a symbolic meaning, serving as a reminder of the demolished cathedral.

It is located in Mezciems near the Garnozon cemetery. The church was built in the Orthodox style that was typical for northern Russia. The construction of the church was financed by merchant M. Chukasov from St. Petersburg.

The supervisor of the design and construction was a war engineer Rashevski; the church was build by Daugavpils fortress constructers. The church was consecrated in 1897.

The church is a one-story wooden log building that is not covered with boards. The four-sided roof is covered with diamond-shaped tin plates. The church has nine towers which are covered with boards and they have five different shapes. The pointed towers with four-sided roof are located above the side entrances on the roofs. The part of the altar roof is decorated with a tower, which hexagonal volume supports the cupola with a cross in the form of an onion.

In the place, where St.Boris and Gleb Orthodox Cathedral is located, in 1866 for army needs there was built an iron church. By order of the leaders of Polatsk eparchy in 1904 the church was moved to present-day Jersika (in Līvāni district).

St.Boris and Gleb Orthodox Cathedral was built in 1904-1905 and was consecrated on 12 June 1905. The architect of the cathedral is unknown, but building was financed by military department that dealt with religious questions of army. Unlike other churches which were consecrated celebrating a certain saint or Biblical event, this Cathedral has two dedications: the first and the important one – to pious knyazs Boris and Gleb, the second – to Saint Alexius of Moscow. Initially the services in the Cathedral were conducted either by the priests arrived from neighbour environs, or by the elder priest of Daugavpils St.Alexander Nevsky cathedral. Only in 1922 here was established permanent parish. In 1925 there initiated to function also Latvian parish, and since that moment St.Boris and Gleb Cathedral had two parishes – Latvian and Russian. In 1938 the cathedral was consecrated by bishop of Jersika – Aleksandrs. It became the main residence of new bishop, thus receiving the designation – cathedral.

St.Boris and Gleb Cathedral in its plan has the shape of oblong rectangle that is divided in three parts: noticeably higher middle nave and two side naves. Stone nave of the cathedral leans on foundation of granite block masonry. Cathedral’s span roof is covered with tin plates. The division in naves is reflected in cathedral’s external view – in side naves’ ends (in corners of the cathedral) there rise towers. In Eastern part of the heightened middle part of the building, on rectangle foundation, there are built 5 small towers. Above the entrance to the cathedral there is a belfry, which initially had four bells. At the moment cathedral’s towers are covered with purple tin roof and its cupolas are coloured blue, but in first half of the 20th century all ten towers had gilded cupolas and crosses. White-coloured building of the cathedral is very expressive – in its external view were used decorative elements of wedge-shaped arch, as well as eaves, columns, pediments, portals, etc. To make the decoration of the building even more impressive, here and there was used light blue coloration. Above the entrance to the cathedral there is placed the picture of the Christ, but its Southern facade is decorated with wall painting of Saint Boris and Gleb. External view of the cathedral, especially the outline of the shape of the decorative columns, relates to Russian architecture of turn of 19th and 20th centuries, in which under the influence of historicism could be seen the echo of Russian and Eastern art.

The cathedral has many wall paintings. Its ceiling also is decorated with paintings. In the middle nave wall there are built windows. But the most interesting component of its interior is iconostasis. Its frame is made of polished oak-wood with beautiful wood-carving that here and there is supplemented with gilding. Although the iconostasis has only one row of icons, it doesn’t create an impression of poor interior of the cathedral. The cathedral has three Gates of the King (usually there is one such Gate that is located in the middle of iconostasis) – in the centre and in side parts, thus creating three-sided. In the central part of the iconostasis, above the painting of “The Last Supper”, there rise three small stylized towers with gilded onion-shaped cupolas crested with crosses. There is an opinion that the icons of cathedral’s iconostasis are the copies of the icons painted by Viktor Vasnetsov (originals are located in St.Vladimir’s Cathedral in Kiev). The iconostasis, as well as 19 cathedral’s icons, created in 1820s, is included in the list of state protected cultural monuments. Altogether in the cathedral there is huge amount of icons, which are dated in period from the beginning of the 19th and till the beginning of the 20th century; among them there are the icons created by I.Udalov (1908) and Tatyana Kosinska (1929-1932).

St.Boris and Gleb Cathedral in the sense of the use of numerous decorative elements is recognized as the most gorgeous orthodox cathedral of this region. Its building is justly considered as one of the most spacious, richly decorated and arranged orthodox cathedrals not only in Latgale, but also in whole Latvia.

Daugavpils first Old Believers’ church is one of the biggest in the whole Latvia. The church was consecrated in 1928 in honor of the birth of Mother of God and St. Nicholas. During WWII the church was destroyed during the bombardment; only the stone walls remained. After the war the chapel was rebuilt. In 1983 the church repair and a new six-row iconostasis installation were carried out. There are a lot of icons in the church. The icons of Vilnius master Ivan Mihailov  “Birth of the Mother of God” and “Sv. Nicholas” have special importance. The icons in the church are dated back to the 19th and 20th century, but there are also some icons made in the 17th and 18th century. Old Believers’ Church of Resurrection, Birth of Mother of God and St. Nicholas in Jaunbuve (New construction) owns in total more than 30 ancient prayer books.

Martin Luther Cathedral designed by V. Neimanis was built in 1893. The foundation stone of the cathedral was put in 1891. The cathedral was consecrated in 1893. In 1941 there was a conflagration in the cathedral and it burned down. In 1941- 1943 the church was partially restored. After the WWII the parish could use only the former chapel space in the church. In 1975 the local authorities confiscated the chapel. During Soviet times the church was both a warehouse and a boxer sport club. In 1985 the building suffered serious fire damage. The parish returned its church in 1992 and gradually began the repair works. There are soleas and the altar (the project author Maija Avota, the altar was made by the craft secondary students in Ogre) in the church. The church was made in Neogothic style. It has an asymmetrical planning and one tower. The building was constructed of red bricks.

Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1905. The church building was designed by architect Wilhelm Neimanis.  The church facade with two towers together with the ordently towers is made in the Neobaroque forms, and the Historicist interiors are augmented by a copy of Bartolome Estebam Murillo’s “Immaculate Conception”, painted by St. Petersburg artist Alexander Borawski in 1906. In 1909 Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary acquired an organ created by A. Homan from Poland. This is one of the largest instruments in Latvia by Polish organ-builder.

Every traveller who wants to be acquainted with Daugavpils should definitely visit the Church Hill that has gathered the churches of four different confessions. Daugavpils Church Hill is located a clear distance away from the city centre, in Jaunbuve (newly erected building) neighbourhood. This neighbourhood was built in 1865 after the approval of the land-use plan for then named Dinaburg (one of the earlier names for the city of Daugavpils). At that time, Jaunbuve consisted mainly of one-storied wooden houses. At the end of 19^th century, red brick buildings started to appear as well. At the turn of the century, the population was beginning to grow. The congregations most of the religious denominations started to have more followers. The need for building churches appeared in this area. Martin Luther Cathedral (18 Novembra Street) was the first to be built in 1893. 1905 two more churches, the Daugavpils Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception (11a A.Pumpura Street) and the Daugavpils Orthodox Cathedral of St Boris and Gleb (2 Tautas Street), were built. In 1928, the House of Prayer of Daugavpils First Old Believer’s Community (16a Puškina Street) appeared.

Due to its amount of sacral buildings, the neighbourhood was named Church Hill. Church Hill is a unique place in Daugavpils. Churches of all four main religious denominations in Latgale exist within a relatively small area. This complex creates a unique panorama of Daugavpils. The churches became not only the religious centre of the Jaunbuve neighbourhood, but also its architectonic dominant. The complex of buildings contributes to the city panorama with its diversity of architectural styles, from Baroque and Neo-gothic to the Byzantine style. During the century the churches survived different times and political powers. The sacral buildings were destroyed several times, but every time they were reconstructed.

The fact that churches of all four different religious denominations have existed for a century within a relatively small area proves the inheritance of deep and strong religious traditions, as well as cultural and historical values in Daugavpils.

The father of the poet Rainis Krishjanis Pliekshan was born in the Stelpe area in “Pliekshani” in 1829. In 1853 he married to the house owner’s daughter of Barbele area “Odini” and went away from the Stelpe area to Ilukste in the area of Chervonka. K. Pliekshan leased several manor in the nowadays Daugavpils region territory – in Birkineli, Randene and in Vasiljovo. He died in 1891 and was buried in Daugavpils Lutheran cemetery. But the poet’s mother Darta Pliekshan was buried in Vitebsk (Belarus).

Valerija Seile (1891-1970) was an educator, publicist, bibliographer. She was the first Constituent Assembly Member, the director of Daugavpils Teacher Institute, the member of Ministry of Education and the laureate of Homeland Prize (1940). She is buried at Catholic cemetery in Daugavpils. The author of the tombstone (1992) is the sculptor Bertulis Buls.

At the right side of Daugavpils Catholic cemetery, the graves of Polish army soldiers are marked with a marble plate and a cross. There is an inscription in Polish on a tomb plate: “Tomb of the unknown soldier”.  It is surrounded by a low fence that most likely was built in the middle of the 30s of the 20th century. The marble plate is embedded in the end of 1950. The graves of unknown colonel and 2 officers are marked near it. On January 21 in 1920 Polish soldiers from Daugavpils Polish military hospital 101 (Warsaw Street) were buried there. Each grave is decorated with a decorative fabric ribbon in the national color of Poland.

The mass grave of fallen in Latgalian battlefront in 1920 Latvian army soldiers of Latvian fight for freedom is located in Daugavpils Lutheran cemetery. At this place on June 22 in 1928, the President Gustav Zemgals opened a granite monument, which was created by architect Alexander Birzenieks. The monument dimensions are 450x120x80 cm. Its frontal side has a 100×60 cm bronze plate with a sword made in a relief and a text: “To Latvian heroes. Thankful nation.1928”. There is a black granite plate with years 1919-1920 indication on the other side. Daugavpils department of Mass grave committee erected the monument with its own funds. About 200 soldiers are buried in Mass grave. Each grave is decorated with a concrete cross (1939) with a carved fallen soldier’s surname, rank and military unit. There are burial places of Polish soldiers between Latvian graves. Each grave hill has a concrete cross with carved fallen surname, name in Latvian and rank.

Graves of the soldiers of the 1st Legion Regiment of Polish army in Slobudka, near Satiksmes street were the biggest ones in Latvia of Polish soldiers, who fell in Latvian fight for freedom in 1919 -1920, a cemetery, where 500 soldiers were buried. A wooden cross was erected near each grave.  Polish soldiers, who fell on January 3 in 1920 releasing Daugavpils from Red Army, are buried at the cemetery. In the center of the cemetery, there is a wooden cross with the inscription “1920. To soldier of 1V General Ridge-Smiglijs remembrance”. “151 unknown former Tsarist Russian army Poles soldiers, who fell during WWI” were also buried at the cemetery. In 1928, in the presence of the Consul of Poland Republic M. Shvezbinska and other Polish and Latvian public workers, the priest of Daugavpils St. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church A. Vizulis consecrated the memorial cornerstone. On June 22 in 1928 Latvian President Gustav Zemgals opened a monument at this cemetery. It was designed by architect Alexander Birzenieks (1893-1980). The monument was constructed in the shape of the sarcophagus and covered with marble. It is decorated with a metal plate with the inscription in Polish “To heroic Polish soldiers fallen for Latvian independence”.

In 1934 the wooden crosses on the graves were changed into the metal ones. In 1955 the city authorities decided to erect a sand and shingle career at the territory of the cemetery. The sand and gravel together with human bones were used in Daugavpils-Lithuanian border road construction through Demene. The cemetery was completely eliminated in 1970. Later, a garbage dump was set up at this place. When Latvian regained its independence in 1992, a monument – 13 m high cross – was opened at the place of the destroyed graves. The cross is made of iron concrete according to artist Romuald Gibovskis and architect Vanda Baulina project. There is an inscription in Polish at the foot of the cross “To Polish soldiers”. But, the General E. Ridge-Smiglij, who participated in the fight for Daugavpils releasing, was buried at one of the largest cemeteries in Europe – Povazki (24 Povazkovskaja Street, Warsaw).

On September 11 in 2010, when Latvian President Valdis Zatlers together with the President of Poland Bronislaw Komarovsky were visiting Daugavpils, both distinguished guests put flowers at the memorial cross.

Now, there is no clear opinion about the final resting place of the member of Polish uprising in 1863 Count Leon Plater. Some sources tell that he was buried in a sandy spot of the fortress, near Riga-Dinaburg highway, but then, during the nighttime, he was secretly reburied in an unknown place. Others claim that he was buried in the 3rd fortress bastion. However, The memorial plate to Poles – public workers, teachers, who died in concentration camps during Stalin rule – is located near it.

Leon Plater was born in 1836, in Kombuli estate of count Joseph Broel-Plater and Antonine from Soltan family. Leon’s father was well-known in Inflantia as a good master and perfectly educated interlocutor; he wrote essays for the journal “Rubon” and was the author of management yearbook. He suffered a lot from the Russian government, because he was a relative of Emily and Caesar Plater, who took participation in the rebellion actions in 1830 in Dinaburg surroundings, finally, Joseph gave them a shelter in his manor to save from Siberia. It was revealed and Joseph Plater together with his family was exiled to Smolensk. Leon Plater spent his childhood there. When the time came to learn, Leon was sent to Riga Gymnasium. The elder brother August took care of him in Riga, he worked at the Governor General. Leon moved from Riga to Mitau (Jelgava), where he finished a high school. He returned home, but his father was already dead, his brother Eugene ruled in Kolumbi, but Leon inherited Casanovo manor, where he remained until his death.

He was cheerful by nature and everyone loved him. He knew almost every craft and he organized a wheel table and a carpenter’s workshop in Casanovo. He loved hunting. (..) When Polish uprising began, Leon decided that it would have been a shame if nobody of Plater family had been involved in this movement. At first, Leon himself wanted to go to Lithuania and join Narbuta party, but in spring 1863, Sigmund Buinickis came from Dagda to Casanovo, that changed Leon’s plans. Buinickis had his own plan: to attack the truck with weapon that would go out from Dinaburg fort for the suppression of Polish uprising in a post track in the forest Baltinu, to take over the weapons and give them to uprising members. In Pardaugava, on May 13 in 1863, Leon with five armed servants, who were loyal to him (servant Zablockis, coachman Jan Bans, headman Citovich, Polish gentlemen Niececkis and Anthony) went to the definite place and waited for the truck that was moving through Kraslava. Later it was stated in the report that there were 50 armed men in forest Baltinu (that is a few kilometers to the east of Kraslava near one of the pubs). (..) Coming closer to the truck with the weapon, the members attacked it, some of the soldiers were killed, some – were wounded, but one officer managed to escape to Kraslava, where 47 soldiers were ordered to chase the rebels.

The attack took place, but the rebels were captured, among them was Leon Plater. Before that, a group of fighters under Leon Plater leadership donated all stolen things to the church in Kraslava, to vicar Ian Bolcevich. Priests under the tsarist government sentenced Bolcevich to 20 years in prison. Leon Plyater was also captured, taken to Dinaburg fortress and sentenced to death. It should be noted that after his brother Eugene descriptions, Leon behaved himself very calmly and confidently in fortress, when members visited him.

The brothers Eugene and Michael were also arrested and delivered to Dinaburg (Daugavpils) fortress. They also wanted to accuse brothers of the participating in the attack, but there were many witnesses who had seen them that day busy with their estate. In fact, the attack was organized by Sigmund Buinickis, but he managed to escape to Russia, later he immigrated to other countries. From there, he wrote to Tsar’s government that Leon was innocent, but the government did not take it into account. There were also testimonies from a wounded soldier that the leader looked differently, but it did not work, either. Leon was sentenced to death. The relatives already knew about it because Leon has been transferred from the jail cell to the fortress cell No.1, where normally prisoners sentenced to death were kept. Leon asked to call a priest.  Boleslaw Aleksandrovich visited him. The priest spent the last night with Leon in the cell (it should be noted that this priest was later sent to forced labor and died on the way to Tyumen). Leon adopted St. Sacrament, forgave those who had condemned him to death, and thanked God for the fact that he could accept death with piece in his soul. So, he greeted morning, asked to allow a meeting with his mother and sisters, since they came to Dinaburg. But that was not allowed to him. A small postcard – that was all that left after him. The whole Europe got to know about the events in the forest near Kraslava, newspapers in Poland, England and France wrote about them. Songs were composed and a novel was written about heroic and courageous count. Poet Janis Rainis glorified the heroic death of count Leon Plater in the children epos “Sun Years”  and in the poem “Sunday and count Plater”.

In Daugavpils you can visit the biggest reconstructed German soldiers’ cemetery in Eastern Latvia in honour of the fallen in World War II, where 3000 soldiers are buried and among them also Latvians. Graveyard is denoted with groups of crosses. Names of fallen soldiers and casualties of Daugavpils prisoner-of-war camp are listed on 14 stelas in the central square of the graveyard. In the niche at the entrance lists of names of the buried soldiers and prisoner-of-war camp victims are placed. Cemetery renewal was done by German War Graves Commission in cooperation with The Brothers’ Cemetery Committee.

In Daugavpils, at the cross point of Baznicas and Liginisku streets, the memorial place of the first Baltic Old Believer’s prayer house (1660) is located. Latvian Old Believers early historical sources indicate that in 1659, in summer, part of Old Believers, saving from persecution, moved to the Duchy of Kurzeme. In the summer of 1660, staying in Liginiski village, they built the first Old Believer’s church in Kurzeme. It was built at the time when in Russia Tsar Alexei Mihailovich ruled. The manager of this church was a priest Terentij, then his son Afanasij and his grandson Stephen. The message that in our district appeared Terentij can be read in the history of Kurzeme. It also became known that the priest Terentij having lived 97 years, died in Liginiski in the summer of 1764. But the son of Terentij, Afanasij died at the age of 111 in Baltruka village in the summer of 1775.

There is a publication “The first Old Believer’s church in the Baltic states” in the Old Believers church calendar of 1960. It says that the church was closed in 1837, during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. The future fate of the church is not clear: whether it burned down or was robbed and destroyed. The symbolic black granite cross is set on its place.

The Nazi troops entered Daugavpils on 6 June 1941 and already on the first days of occupation launched the campaign to annihilate the Jews of Daugavpils. Pursuant to an order of 15 July 1941 all Jews had to move to the ghetto – a fortification on the left bank of the Daugava River. The majority of those imprisoned in the ghetto were Jews from Daugavpils; however, later a couple of thousand Jews from towns and rural areas in the vicinity were driven here – from Krāslava, Grīva, Višķi, Indra, Kārsava, Dagda, Ilūkste district and other places (also from Lithuania). In total approximately 15 000 to 20 000 Jews were placed in the ghetto, of which less than 100 persons survived.

From July 1941 to the end of 1943 in the Mežciems (historical name – Poguļanka) Forest Jews, taken from Daugavpils ghetto at various times, were shot here. The exact number of victims is unknown.

The Memorial to commemorate the victims of genocide against Jews and prisoners of the Daugavpils ghetto was opened on 10 November 1991, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the Holocaust (author of the memorial – sculptor Oleg Marinoha). The memorial consists of a granite stele with the Star of David cut into it and an inscription on Yiddish “To the Memory of the Children of Israel”, with 16 stone steles placed on both sides of it, symbolically reminding of the memory of the Holocaust victims from various European states. These steles also bear the Star of David, as well as the names of the states and number of those who perished: Czechoslovakia – 30000, Russia/Belarus/Ukraine– 1 252 000, Baltic States – 223 000, Greece – 45000, Luxemburg – 1000, Yugoslavia – 20000, Romania – 300 000, Italy – 3000, Belgium – 40 000, Poland – 3 000000, Holland – 105 000, Norway – 900, Bulgaria – 14 000, France– 90 000, Hungary – 450 000.

The memorial stone by artist Juris Pundurs was erected on September 12, 2013, in Aizpilsētas park close to the Gubisces lake (behind Daugavpils 15th Secondary School), in the place where once was the old Jewish cemetery.

There is the Star of David and the tablet on the memorial stone. The words from the Second Book of Moses (30:16) are carved at the six-pointed star in four languages (Latvian, Hebrew, Russian and English): “And it shall be a memorial of the children of Israel before the LORD”. And below there is the tablet with an inscription in Latvian, Russian and English languages: “This place was a site of the Jewish cemetery, established at the end of the XVII century and destroyed in the 70’s of the XX century”.

There was the old Jewish cemetery (the end of the 17th century) on Sunezers peninsula close to Gubisces lake, that was destroyed in the 70’s of the XX century, in Soviet times. The cemetery was destroyed and the park was established there. Some graves moved to a separate area of a Communal cemetery. Not only ordinary Jews were buried in this cemetery, but also Rabbi Meir Simcha Katz-Kagan, Ruchko, Rabbi Rogachev and other, as well as remains and ashes of 2000 Jewish children that was burned in Daugavpils ghetto.

On 6 September 2015 in the place of former Daugavpils ghetto, next to Daugavgrīva Prison the Jewish community of Daugavpils unveiled a monument with an inscription in English, Latvian, Russian and Hebrew: “In memory of ghetto prisoners. From July 15, 1941 to May 1, 1942 Daugavpils Jewish ghetto was located here.”

The design for the memorial stone was created by artist Juris Pundurs, whereas materials for making it were donated by a company Ltd. “Kvarcits” from Daugavpils.

Gzegoz Fitelberg (1879 – 1953) was born in Dinaburg (Daugavpils) in Jewish-Polish family. He was a significant composer, conductor and violinist. The memorial plaque (designed by Olga Baumane) was opened in 2005 during the Daugavpils City Day 730-year anniversary.

Daugavpils Fortress was an imprisonment place of downtrodden participants of Polish uprising where leader of the uprising Leon Plater was sentenced to death penalty.

In 1863 another Polish uprising started. Polish mutineers who lived in Daugavpils planned to take over the fortress and settle there. But this plan was unconsidered from the very beginning: the fortress was well fixed with a big garrison whose armoury was increased with 258 cannons (all together 539 cannons) and therefore was inaccessible for a small group of mutineers.

On April 11, 1863 from Dinaburg to Disna was sent transport with load of weapons (398 guns, 9 pistols and 22 swords) that was guarded by 8 soldiers. In the evening near Kraslava unit of Polish mutineers led by Leon Plater attacked the carriage, they grabbed one part of arms, but destroyed the rest, and left for Vishki. The mutineers were chased by grenadier gunnery brigade from Kraslava, which with the help of local peasants in Skaista manor one part of weapons. For participation in robbery of weapon carriage were also arrested landlords – brothers Earls Yevgeny and Michael Plater.

This incident was then described in newspapers in Poland, England and France. Polish uprising took place in many circuits of Vitebsk province and were savagely suppressed. On April 21 in the fortress was founded Investigation commission, which was led by lieutenant – general Dlotovskis, the head of Vitebsk province Army. Prisoners were handed over to court martial, and its verdicts were fulfilled on spot. Leon Plater was sentenced to death penalty by shooting. His property was confiscated, but for the losses made by his unit was imposed a double indemnity. Four participants of L. Plater’s unit were sentenced to 4 years in hard labour; two of his brothers were sentenced to imprisonment. They spent 20 weeks in prison and were released due to lack of evidence. In his turn Leon Plater was shot in sand behind the fortress not far from Riga-Dinaburg railway station embankment at 11:00 on June 9, 1863 (other sources mention May 26 or 27).

On June 9, 2013, there was an opening of the memorial plaque to the count Leon Plater in Daugavpils Fortress. Mr. Andris Berzins, the president of Latvia, and Mr. Bronislaw Komorovsky, the president of Poland, participated in this event.

Andrejs Shvirksts (1897 – 1955) was  Local government officer (since 1928 till 1934 – the Chairman of the Daugavpils district, since 1934 till 1938 – the senior of the Daugavpils district, sine 1938 till 1940 – mayor of Daugavpils), Public figure (since 1938 till 1940 – Chairman of the Association of Latvians of Daugavpils).

Andrejs Shvirksts was born in Shlosbergi house, Jersika parish, Daugavpils district. In year of 1915 he graduated from Livenhof (Livani) city school. After the graduation A. Shvirksts worked in the railway service, in 1917 he was one of the organizers of Latvian Riflemen’s Latgalian regiment. In 1919 he finished teacher training courses and worked as a teacher in schools of Livenhof parish.

Since the year of 1920 Andrejs Shvirksts worked in Daugavpils district’s administration, since 1928 till 1937 he was the chairman of the Daugavpils city administration, taking over the post from his predecessor, the Minister of People’s Welfare Jānis Volonts. During these two years, a lot was accomplished in the economic and cultural life of the city: a House of Unity, the first modern multifunctional building of its kind in the Baltics, was completed, a new bandstand was built in the Stropi woods, city streets were expanded, and a Daugavpils branch of the State Historical Museum was opened. Shvirksts contributed much to the construction of many rural schools in Daugavpils district – in Jersika, Sutras, Indra, Daugaviesi, Piedruja, Kalniesi.

A. Shvirksts actively participated in the activities of the association of the old Latvian Riflemen, in the Latvian Red Cross, in Daugavpils branch of Latvian Children’s Aid Union, in Daugavpils branch of Health Promotion Society, Daugavpils fire fighters’ society, etc. He was also the Chairman of the Association of Latvians of Daugavpils. A. Shvirksts was awarded with the Order of Three Stars, the Lacplasis Military Order and the Order of Viesturs.
In 1940, A. Shvirksts was the Chairman of the Latgalian Song Festival organizing committee. This splendid event was held on June the 16th, and became the painful epilogue to the Latvian state, as well as to the Andrejs Shvirkst’s work dedicated to the prosperity of Latgale: the next day the Soviet tanks came into Daugavpils, following the road along the Stropi bandstand.

On the June 14th, 1941, A. Shvirksts was arrested and exiled to Siberia, on the 17th of November in Vyatlag (Vyatka forced labour camp) he was sentenced to death, but a year later, on 16 December 1942, NKVD sentenced A. Shvirksts to serve 10 years in prison. After serving the sentence, he was forbidden to return to Latvia. A. Shvirksts died on October the 3rd, 1955, in Gorky region’s Kstovo district’s village of Pochinki, and was buried in a foreign land. On 17th of November, 2011, a memorial plaque dedicated to the Andrejs  Shvirksts was unveiled on the wall of the House of Unity in Daugavpils. The plaque was designed by the sculptor Ivo Folkmanis.

There is house number 4 on Mihoelsa Street, where the great actor Solomon Mikhoels was born in 1890. This outstanding person is rightly considered the legend of the 20th century theatre.

Mikhoels was born in Daugavpils (Dvinsk at that time) in 1890 in the patriarchal Jew family of Vovsi in Postojalaja Street, which now is named after the world famous actor’s name. The boy’s name was Shloime. In 1905 the Vovsi family moved to Riga. Shloime was spellbound with actor’s skill. In one of the workshops, playing King Lear, Shloime said that once he would play tat role on a big stage. These words came true. In 1935 he played King Lear and became world-famous.

After his father’s will in 1915 Shloime joined Petrograd University Faculty of Law, but in his last year he left the university and became the studies student of the first Jewish theater in the world established by A.Granovskij. At the age of 29 Shloime Vovsi changed his name to the pseudonym and became Solomon Mihoels. When the study theater was renamed to the State Jewish Theatre, Solomon Mihoels, in 1929, began to work as its artistic director. He was in this position until his tragic death. After WWII  S. Mihoels founded his own theater. He created also the vivid film roles in the films “Circus”, “Jewish happiness” and “Openheim family”. In 1946, the actor was awarded the USSR State Prize.

In 1941, Stalin established the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. It was directed by Solomon Mikhoels. The committee’s task was to ask the USA for help. Many tens of millions of dollars flowed to the till of the Soviet Union. When the war ended, the Cold War and core competition began between the USSR and the USA. The Anti-Fascist Committee was no longer needed. S. Mihoels died in 1948 in Minsk, in the faked car crash according to Stalin’s order, the truck ran over him mutilating beyond recognition.

Daugavpils is the poet Rainis’ first childhood city. The poet spent his childhood not far from Daugavpils, in Randene, Berkenele and Vasilova farmsteads. Daugavpils Secondary school No.6 (former Griva German school where the poet studied) nowadays is renamed in honour of the poet as J. Rainis Daugavpils Secondary School No. 6. On the front square of Daugavpils University there is the poet’s bust sculpture made by sculptor Indulis Folkmanis (1966).

The poet A. Pumpurs (1841-1902) created epos “Lacplesis” (1888) about the legendary national hero Lacplesis (13th century), the fighter against foreign conquerors that is based on folk tales.

In 1896, A. Pumpurs settled in Daugavpils. He served as an army quartermaster. A. Pumpurs was included in the circles of the local Latvian intelligentsia. Unfortunately, his staying in Daugavpils was fatal for him: his daughter and son died here, the poet himself fell ill with an incurable disease. The street and the square in the center of Daugavpils, where the bust of the poet is located, have the name of the poet.

On 25 September 2016, which was the 113th Mark Rothko’ birthday, near to Mark Rothko Art Centre was opened an environment object “Tribute to Rothko” made by the French artist Patrick Peltier. The artist created the environment art object from purple, carmine red and black coloured concrete, since these are the same colours Mark Rothko used when painting in Houston Chapel.

The open-air art work “GHOST OF THE FORTRESS” was created in 2017 during the Second International Sculpture Symposium, that was organized in the framework of residency program of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center. Sculpture is located behind the Culture and Information Center of Daugavpils fortress.

The main inspiration for the work came from the Daugavpils fortress. Every notable place especially buildings has its’ own residing ghost. For Daugavpils fortress it is ghost of a war horse, because as a war horse, fortifying structures like the one in Daugavpils was once a crucial military instrument that became obsolete as the progress rolled on. Thus the ghost of war horse is the true representation of Daugavpils fortress soul, if a military structure has one. Thus now it stands there, bigger than life all covered in bandages, because in the real life, that is the result of every battle. Every glorious cavalry charge, every acclaimed stance against incoming enemy forces always reverberates in infirmaries. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about most of the famous military conflicts of the past, especially WWI is the photographs of wounded soldiers covered in bandages.

And of course ghosts radiates light or reflects it without an obvious source as a ghost should. Also you can draw images or letters on it with any light emitting device, phone flashlight, for example.

The Polish House in Daugavpils is an important centre for preserving and promoting the Polish language, culture, history, and national heritage. It regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, festivals, and other cultural events that bring together different generations and strengthen the connection with Polish traditions.

The building of the Polish House was purchased in 1930 with funds collected by the local Polish community. During the Soviet period, it was nationalised, but after the restoration of Latvia’s independence, the property was returned to the Polish community. In 1997, with the support of the Daugavpils City Council, the Polish Cultural Centre was established in the building. Today, it continues to enrich the cultural life of Latgale and Latvia as a whole, preserving and promoting Polish traditions. Since 2026, the activities of the Polish House have been included in the structure of the National Culture Centre, introducing a new organisational model. Nevertheless, the Polish House continues to fulfill its cultural mission.

The mission of the Polish House team is to preserve Polish culture, language, and historical heritage, as well as to create an environment where people of different generations can develop their talents and strengthen their connection to their roots. It is an open space for creativity, collaboration, and shared cultural experiences.

The Polish House hosts concerts, creative workshops, competitions, exhibitions, festivals, and art classes for children, young people, and adults. An important part of its work is cooperation with Polish schools, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, Polish associations, and cultural institutions in Latvia and Poland, enabling joint projects and artistic exchange programs.

Daugavpils Fortress is a unique cultural and historical architectural monument of national significance, covering an area of about 150 hectares. It is considered the last bastion‑type fortress in the world that has survived without major alterations and still retains its unique fortification system. From a bird’s‑eye view, the fortress resembles the shape of a sun or a star, while some observers see the outlines of a turtle or a bat. Today, the fortress is one of the most popular attractions in Daugavpils.

More about the fortress:
An equally important part of the fortress ensemble is its internal development. Around 80 buildings have been preserved here to this day, connected by ten streets, each of which still retains its historical name. At present, the fortress infrastructure is being restored, and its buildings are experiencing a period of revival. One such site is the former water lifting house, which now houses the Daugavpils Fortress Visitors Centre. The restored Commandant’s House currently accommodates the Latgale Regional Administration and the Daugavpils Department of the State Police, while the Artillery Arsenal building is used by the Rothko Museum. In 2023, the former Engineering Arsenal was transformed into the Centre of Technics and Industrial Design “Engineering Arsenal”, offering a contemporary perspective on the historical environment.

In recent years, several other significant objects of the fortress have also been restored. The Nicholas Gate, which in 2013 was recognised as Latvia’s best restoration project, has been renovated, as well as the wooden bridge that once connected the gate with the first riverside lunette. The guardhouse of the lunette has also undergone restoration, along with the rampart of the 7th bastion — a stretch of about 400 meters featuring casemates, which now house an exhibition of contemporary ceramics. A permanent exhibition dedicated to the renowned Latvian ceramicist Pēteris Martinsons — “Martinsons House” — has been created in the former gunpowder cellar. These projects have significantly reshaped the appearance of the fortress, making it even more attractive to visitors.

In 2018, the Daugavpils Fortress regeneration project was awarded the Council of Europe Landscape Award.

Construction of the fortress began in 1810 to protect the western borders of the Russian Empire in anticipation of the war with Napoleon. The project was entrusted to military engineer Major General Heckel, and in total, around 10,000 people took part in building the fortress, working continuously in two shifts. Immediately after the end of the War of 1812, construction resumed, and up until the beginning of the First World War, the fortress housed a garrison of the Imperial Russian Army. In total, the fortress could accommodate up to six thousand people.

In 1920, units of the Latvian Army were stationed in the fortress — specifically, three infantry regiments and one artillery regiment of the 4th Zemgale Division.

In 1940, the Red Army took over the Daugavpils Fortress. The previous garrison was disbanded, and the Latvian Army regiments left the site. During the Second World War, a prisoner‑of‑war camp for Soviet soldiers, “Stalag‑340”, was established on the fortress grounds. A Jewish ghetto operated in the bridgehead area, where Jews from Daugavpils and the surrounding regions, as well as from Lithuania, were brought. From 1948 to 1994, the Daugavpils Higher Military Aviation Engineering School was located in the fortress.

Today, the fortress is a city district with more than a thousand residents.

In recent years, the fortress has been developing rapidly and attracting an increasing number of visitors from Latvia and abroad. Numerous projects aimed at improving and revitalising the fortress and its surrounding area are actively being implemented. More and more families choose this place for walks, outdoor recreation, and photoshoots.

The fortress hosts a wide range of events at the city, national, and international level. Every year it hosts Museum Night as well as the European Heritage Days.

In 2015, a new tradition emerged in the fortress — the historical reenactment festival “Dinaburga 1812”. During this event, visitors can watch a reenactment of the 1812 events, when the French army advanced, and the fortress was bravely defended by Russian forces. In addition to the reenactment, the festival offers a wide range of activities for guests of all ages — both children and adults.

At the Fortress Visitor Centre, you can learn about its history and development, discover upcoming improvement projects for the area, and find information about future events. The centre also features an exhibition dedicated to the fortress, as well as maps and other tourist materials available for visitors.

During the active tourist season, the guardhouse building is also open to visitors.

In 2024, Daugavpils Fortress joined the Association of Latvian Castles and Manors.

In 2025, the fortress became a member of the European cultural network of fortified heritage “FORTE CULTURA”, as well as the European Federation of Fortified Sites “EFFORTS”.

The exhibition familiarizes with one of the oldest Russian folk art, which became a unique artistic phenomenon, Gzhel ceramics. Gzhel is an ancient pottery district of Moscow region.
The date, when the manufacture of ceramics began there, is unknown. But one of the thirty villages, that gave the name to the whole district, was first mentioned in 1328 in the testament of the Moscow Prince Ivan Kalita.

The dominant architectural landmark of Daugavpils’ historical centre is the Unity House (22a Rīgas Street), built during the years of the First Latvian Republic. The idea for its construction was initiated by the President of Latvia, Kārlis Ulmanis, and the building was funded through public donations and state support. The cornerstone was laid in 1936, and the building was officially opened on 19 December 1937.

Unity House was designed by architect Verners Vitands. At that time, it was considered one of the most modern multifunctional buildings in Europe, housing the Daugavpils Theatre, the Latvian Society, a library, and various community organisations. The architectural design combines classical elements with the principles of functionalism, reflecting the aesthetic ideals of that era.

UNITY HOUSE TODAY
The building of Unity House is home to several important cultural institutions: the Daugavpils Theatre, the House of Traditions, the Latgale Culinary Heritage Centre “Šmakovka”, and the Daugavpils Tourist Service Centre. Unity House also hosts the Latgale Central Library, which offers visitors a wide range of services, as well as the American Information Centre and the Family Digital Activity Hub.

The building additionally includes a café and a bank, providing convenience for both residents and visitors of the city.

Unity House is managed by the municipal institution “Vienības nams”. It is the organiser of numerous events, including international ones, as well as various cultural projects. The institution preserves and maintains the Latvian cultural environment. Unity House organises national and city celebrations, annual traditional festivities, concerts, educational and entertainment events. One of its priorities is the research, promotion, and maintenance of the building in its historical form.

Unity House — the spiritual and cultural heart of Daugavpils — continues to fulfil its historical mission, uniting the city’s multicultural community and enriching its cultural life.

On 17 November 2011, a memorial plaque dedicated to Andrejs Švirksts (1897–1955) — a Latvian public figure and politician, Mayor of Daugavpils (1938–1940), and Chairman of the Daugavpils Latvian Society — was unveiled on the wall of Unity House. The plaque was created by sculptor Ivo Folkmanis.

Daugavpils was one of the first cities in Latvia to transform Rīgas Street—more than half a kilometre long—into a pedestrian street in the late 1970s. The street connects the railway station with the Daugava River, where an arch under the embankment opens the way to the waterfront.

In 2009, the reconstruction of Rīgas Street was completed, giving the city a striking example of a harmonious blend of historical heritage and modern design. During a leisurely walk, visitors can admire the elegant building façades, enjoy shopping, and relax over a good meal.

Several notable buildings and landmarks are located on Rīgas Street:

• Saint Peter’s in Chains Roman Catholic Church, built in 1848–1849 and reconstructed in 1924–1934. The architecture of the church features elements of Classicism, and its appearance resembles St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
• The Sculpture Garden.
• Not far from the Sculpture Garden and the Saint Peter’s in Chains Roman Catholic Church stands the sculpture of a marsh turtle (sculptor Ivo Folkmanis, 2009), as well as the only sculpture in Latvia dedicated to Latgalian ceramics. Rīgas Street is also adorned with the beloved cat sculpture, which has become a popular symbol of the city.
• At the intersection of Mihoelsa and Rīgas Streets, a metal bat sculpture is mounted on a lamppost — an unusual and eye‑catching element of the urban environment.
• A particularly majestic building is located at Rīgas Street 61 (1860), one of the most striking examples of eclecticism, distinguished by its richly decorated façade.
• The Daugavpils Railway Station, built in 1951.
• At the end of the street, opposite the railway station, a decorative cascade of water pools has been installed.
• The Unity House, built in 1936–1937, is a state‑protected architectural monument.
• The Fire Station, built in 1876, is an architectural monument of regional significance.
• The Daugavpils Museum building is an architectural object in the Jugendstil style, built in 1883 and included in the list of state‑protected architectural monuments.

Every autumn, Daugavpils hosts the Rīgas Street Festival. This event has become an integral part of the city’s cultural life and an important tradition that residents and visitors experience through light installations, music, visual arts, dance, and artisan workshops. The Rīgas Street Festival was first held in the early 1990s, and in 2014 the tradition was revived. Since then, it has taken place annually in September.

Monument for park creator and ex-mayor of Daugavpils Pavel Dubrovin (1839-1890) is erected in Dubrovin Park. Approximately 2 meters high Bronze figure (2007) is set up in a special created area not far from a fountain in the park landscape formed by him. Located between Rigas and Parades Streets. The development of the park was actively supported by Pavel Dubrovin (1839–1890), who was the city mayor from 1876 to 1890. The park was named after its creator, and not far from the fountain there is a monument to Pavel Dubrovin – a bronze figure, about 2 m tall (by Alexander Taratynov, 2007). Another feature of the park is a memorial for the Soviet Army soldiers that was erected in Soviet times. Dubrovin Park is the favorite rest and recreation place for local residents. In the sultry heat of summer nothing is more pleasant than to feel the refreshing coolness of the fountain, while in the evenings one can admire a fantastic play of water and light.

Dedication to Rothko memorial monument that was created by the artist Romuald Gibovsky, was erected on the picturesque bank of the River Daugava – the source of the brightest impressions of the artist’s childhood. The monument indicates Shossejnaja Street (now 18 Novembra Street), where from 1892 to 1913 the Rothkovitz family lived. Through large, heavy metal forms you can see the creative emptiness of the sky and the river – ever-changing landscape, just like in the classical paintings of Mark Rothko.

Daugavpils synagogue Kadish built in 1850 is located at 38 Cietoksna Street. It is a corner building in the central part of the city with the facades facing Lacplesa and Cietoksna Streets. The engineering equipment of the building was repaired after the Second World War, and in 2005, with the support provided by M. Rothko’s children, the synagogue was fully restored. Latvia’s ex-president Vaira Vike-Freiberga took part in the opening ceremony of the renovated synagogue. The Jewish of Daugavpils and Latgale museum  is located on the 2nd floor of the synagogue.

The most dramatic changes in the economic life of Dinaburg (Daugavpils) were brought about by the opening of the Petersburg–Dinaburg–Warsaw and Riga–Dinaburg–Oryol railway lines in 1860 and 1861. The Petersburg–Warsaw railway line, along with its bridges, viaducts, and several station buildings, was designed by Stanislav Kerbedz, an engineer of Polish origin.

Today, Daugavpils is an important railway hub, served by five railway lines. The current railway station building was constructed in 1951.

Daugavpils Railway Station is located in the city centre, next to Rīgas Street — the main pedestrian promenade. From the station, diesel trains operate on the routes Rīga–Daugavpils, Rīga–Daugavpils–Krāslava, Rīga–Daugavpils–Indra, and once a year, during the Aglona Feast of the Assumption, a special train runs through Daugavpils to Aglona.

A unique 6-km long engineering structure along the bank of the Daugava River, which not only protects the city against floods, but also serves as a road. The protection embankment was designed by Pavel Melnikov, a military engineer-captain, and constructed in 1830–1841. In some places the embankment is 9 meters higher than the water level in the river.
