Visitors can explore the history, cultural heritage, and notable personalities of the left bank of the Daugava River in Daugavpils.

The centre’s exhibition is dedicated to three notable personalities connected with this historical school: the Latvian poet, playwright, translator, theatre practitioner, journalist, and politician Jānis Pliekšāns – Rainis; the botanist, mathematician, and philosopher Kārlis Reinholds Kupfers; and the graphic artist Rihards Zariņš, one of the creators of the Latvian national coat of arms and the author of designs for banknotes, securities, and coins. The centre offers guided tours and creative workshops for school groups, families, and adult visitors.

Permanent Exhibition
Raiņa Centre is located in the building of the former Grīva German School and Rainis Secondary School No. 6. Many outstanding personalities studied here, and their achievements in various fields have made a significant contribution to the development of Latvian culture and science.

Guided Tour “Different Times – Different School”
During the tour, participants learn how schools developed in the Daugavpils area, what characterised German schools in the 19th century, and which subjects Rainis studied. Visitors can explore the most interesting historical events and secrets of the school building and its surroundings, and take part in practical activities by tackling tasks from old school subjects such as calligraphy, poetry writing, rhetoric, or natural sciences.

The tour is available in Latvian, Russian, and English.
Group size: 6–30 participants (larger groups are divided into two).
Materials are included in the ticket price.
Duration: 1 hour.

Creative Workshops
In the workshop “Let’s Get Acquainted – GRAPHICS!” participants explore the works of R. Zariņš, the types of seals created by R. Kupfers, the diversity of graphic techniques, and create their own graphic artwork. Each workshop focuses on creative experimentation and discovering materials and techniques, inspired by the unique legacy of Rainis, Kupfers, and Zariņš. Raiņa Centre provides all necessary materials.

Group size: 6–16 participants.
Duration: 1 hour.

Open storage is still underused in Latvian museum practice – so far, only a few heritage institutions enable the public to see their treasures beyond the normally closed repository setting. Open-storage facilities aim to give maximum access to museum collections that would otherwise stay behind closed repository doors and be mostly unavailable to the general public. The idea to bring the closely guarded museum collections out into the public eye originated in Canada in the 1970s and 80s. At the start, the new approach was called a radical shift and embodied an early attempt to move beyond the habitual museum practice. Today, this is no longer a new and surprising development. After all, the new museum definition has expanded its functions, lifting into the foreground accessibility to an increasingly broader spectrum of social groups along with diversified communication through tangible and intangible heritage tools.

The Rothko Museum’s open-storage facility displays a significant part of a vast contemporary ceramics collection steadily and purposefully acquired for no less than a decade. Its origins date back to 2013 when the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre held its first International Ceramic Laboratory Symposium, which became an annual tradition. From then on, the collection has been expanding yearly with the latest symposium output. Other acquisition sources are the Latvia Ceramics Biennale with its Martinsons Award and an eponymous international juried exhibition instituted in 2016, as well as some other juried exhibitions and a few targeted purchases. Professional curators have been attracting domestically and internationally renowned ceramic artists and achieving their representation in the Rothko Museum collection. At this point, the museum’s Contemporary Ceramics Collection has grown to more than 500 artworks, which makes it Latvia’s largest and most valuable repository of contemporary ceramic art.

The new open-storage chamber displays over a hundred artworks by artists from 40 countries. The open-access solution enables the public to explore the diversity of ceramic art and appreciate the artists’ creativity and professionalism in dealing with different earthen materials (from clay and chamotte to stoneware and porcelain) and multiple firing techniques.

The open-storage chamber is available daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The entrance is free.

The 7th bastion of the Daugavpils Fortress was restored in an EU-funded project “Cross-Border Loyalty Programme for Culture and Tourism” under the European Neighbourhood Instrument.

A complex system of fortifications with ditches, trenches and bunkers was built on both sides of the front line. Thousands of soldiers fought and died in fierce battles here, which is evidenced by the countless burials of fallen soldiers. Many concrete bunkers, impressive cannon and ammunition storages, and endless twists and turns of trenches built by German soldiers have survived to this day in the forests of Demene, Svente and Medumi Parishes of Daugavpils District.

Exhibition which is 113 sq.m. large consists of two thematic blocks. The first part is devoted to the events of the First World War in Europe and Latvia. The visitors can get familiar with the life of soldiers, with the innovations that arose during the First World War, as well as study what weapons were used by the German and Russian Armies. On the other hand, the visitors of the second thematic block have the opportunity to assume the role of a soldier and experience first-hand the everyday life at the bunker. An imitation of a Russian bunker has been created in the hall – a fragment of a trench with a small dugout, war attributes and soldier mannequins. A bunker of the Russian Army has been made because they were built of wood and have not been preserved to this day, while the concrete bunkers of the German Army can be seen in life by visiting the international route through the bunkers of the First World War. Much attention is paid to audio and video equipment in the hall with an imitation of a bunker as it gives visitors the opportunity to feel the atmosphere of the battlefield. Modern design makes the exhibition interesting and easy to understand for different audiences. However, more attention is paid to school-aged children, for whom visiting the exhibition is like a repetition of what they learn in history lessons.

The project is being implemented within the framework of INTERREG V-A Latvia-Lithuania Cross-Border Cooperation Program project LLI-501 “World War I heritage tourism route and expositions for attracting visitors to border area”

The album “Terra Mariana” narrates about the spreading of Christianity in Livonia (nowadays territory of Latvia and Estonia), which also was called the Land of Maria (Terra Mariana), or the Land of Mara. The album contains a plenty of visual and textual information about the Livonian castles, ruins, churches, seals and coats of arms of Livonian nobility, historical figures, as well as the imprints of golden and silver coins. The illustrations are explained by the texts in Latin language, written in Old Gothic church style. The author of the album is Latgalian historian Gustav von Manteuffel. The album is a very important source of knowledge about the Latgalian cultural and historical heritage.

This unique issue is placed into a showcase, but you can use an interactive stand right next to it and leaf through the electronic version of the album.

It is the largest and most contemporary Latgalian Culinary Heritage Centre in Latvia, which offers an attractive story about Latgale’s strong drink that has already become a brand in Latgale.

It is possible to gain knowledge of the process of making shmakovka with the help of the latest technologies, as well as to look at authentic and impressive production equipment in the three halls of the exposition (with a total area of 290 m2).

Along with the story about making a drink, it is possible to look at old photos and documents in digital exposition, as well as to become aware of the most important stages in Latgale’s history. The exposition also plays an educational role because it informs about the consequences of alcohol consumption. Here you can see a set of modern equipment related to the food industry which is used in the preparation of high-quality shmakovka.

Residents of local and more distant neighbourhoods took part in the creation of the exposition and donated various things related to shmakovka, for example, dishes, tubes, “hoses”, various measuring instruments, glasses and many other, perhaps even initially incomprehensible objects.

The centre has more than 200 different exhibits, the oldest one dates back to 1890.

The Latgalian Culinary Heritage Centre offers:

The Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia, is one of the 21st century’s most ambitious cultural projects in Eastern Europe. Located in the historical artillery arsenal of the Daugavpils Fortress, this multifunctional hub for art, culture and education remains an evolving and inspiring place for creative expression and experience.

The majestic exterior of the sweeping heritage building fully matches the interior design and the quality of art on display, where original paintings by Mark Rothko, a pioneer of abstract expressionism and colour field painting, renowned as one of the 20th century’s most influential artists, take pride of place.

In addition to showcasing Rothko’s work (and being the only space in Europe, other than the Tate Gallery in London, to have a permanent room of original Rothkos with up to six paintings on display), the museum holds four exhibition seasons per year, totalling up to 30 different projects across 2500 square metres of gallery space. These solo and group show projects trace current trends and developments in local and international art, offering a diverse and exciting range of experiences for art enthusiasts.

In 2022, the Rothko Museum acquired additional gallery space in the Martinsons House, a new cultural venue a few steps away from the main museum building. Besides a permanent display, The City of Dreams, featuring original works by the great ceramicist Pēteris Martinsons, visitors to the new extension can enjoy rotating temporary exhibitions.

Adjacent to the Martinsons House, the Daugavpils Fortress’s 7th bastion casemate has been converted into an open-storage chamber for contemporary ceramics from the Rothko Museum Collection. Displaying over a hundred artworks from 40 countries, the open-access solution, available free of charge, enables the public to explore the diversity of the ceramic medium and appreciate the artists’ creativity and mastery of different earthen materials (ranging from clay and chamotte to stoneware and porcelain) across multiple firing techniques.

Apart from gallery space, the Rothko Museum has dedicated areas where its educational and entertainment functions get shaped, such as a concert hall, a conference sector, residence rooms and studios, where artists are welcome to stay and work, and a children’s space, where kids can explore their creativity and be educated about art.

THINGS TO DO:

see a permanent display of original paintings by Mark Rothko and learn about his life and art in the Rothko room;

enjoy temporary exhibitions of renowned Latvian and international contemporary artists;

Rothko Museum has a residence area with 10 well-appointed and comfortable rooms. Accommodations are regularly used by artists and other creators, but the opportunity to enjoy the symbiosis of art and history is open to everyone, especially the city’s guests. Residence rooms can receive up to 20 persons at a time.

Rothko Museum offers rental of premises for conferences, lectures, seminars, concerts, meetings and other important events in the conference sector, chamber hall or outdoor courtyard. There is also a souvenir kiosk and “Arsenal” Cafe on the premises of the Rothko Museum that can accommodate up to 60 visitors.

Gzhel front room
The exhibition familiarizes with one of the oldest Russian folk art, which became a unique artistic phenomenon, Gzhel ceramics. Gzhel is an ancient pottery district of Moscow region.
The date, when the manufacture of ceramics began there, is unknown. But one of the thirty villages, that gave the name to the whole district, was first mentioned in 1328 in the testament of the Moscow Prince Ivan Kalita.

In the history of Gzhel, as a center of national pottery, there were three stages of development. The first one relates to the production of majolica in the second half of the 18th century. The fashionable at the time majolica dish was produced by Gzehl masters in small home workshops. The products of colored clay with a thick porous crock were covered with opaque white enamel, on which “in the raw way” they made the multi-colored painting with enamel paints. This technique required high skills of drawing and painting. At the turn of 18th – 19th century majolica was crowd out by the fashionable blue-white English faience. Creative potters created the unique new transition material in the history of world ceramics – halffaience. The products of halffaience had a light gray crock and were covered with a transparent colorless glaze. The painting on them was underglaze and overglaze, but it was drawn only by a cobalt, with blue paint on a white background.

Reaching the authentic artistic heights in the manufacture of halffaience dish, Gzhel masters started to produce fine faience. Not only did Gzehl masters master the new material, but they created a distinctive style of faience products. It was clearly seen in the shape of dish, decoration, that combined plastic and painting techniques, story and ornamental painting. The production of faience products not only brought Gzhel to the path of the art industry but also made this district of Moscow an internationally recognized centre of Russian folk ceramic art. Halffaience and fine faience is the second stage in the development of Gzhel. The third stage began in the second half of the 20th century, when the art craft was revived. In the development of a new, modern style of Gzhel ceramic, the principle of combining of a white background with blue painting was taken as a basis, that existed at the beginning of the 19th century on the products of halffaience, but the inherited from the predecessor technology has undergone significant changes: a different material – porcelain – was used, as well as new ceramic paints. The collection of Gzhel ceramics, that Daugavpils National Culture Centre can boast of, is considered to be one of the best in Latvia. It mainly consists of modern porcelain products of Gzhel masters. Among numerous exhibits demonstrated in the exhibition in Russian House, you can see amazingly beautiful kumgans and kvasniks, dishes and jugs, winebowls and cups, vases and sets, watches and a variety of figures of people and animals.

Hohloma chamber
Hohloma chamber was opened in February 2005. This is one of the most interesting and originally decorated exhibition halls of National Culture Centre. A small, but very cozy room styled under Russian izba, but all the furniture is painted with Hohloma patterns. The colorful scarves, imported from different regions of Russia, bright Russian dolls and copper samovars add up to the unique colour to the interior. But the chief ornament of the chamber is the collection of original Russian Hohloma. Hohloma is a bright, original phenomenon of Russian folk decorative art. This traditional art craft can boast of its more than three hundred year history. It emerged in the second half of the 17th century in Zavolzje of Nizny Novgorod near the shopping village Hohloma, from which it took its name. The forest edge of Zavolzje had long been famous for its wonderful wood-carvers, but local masters of painting, among which were famous icon painters, invented a unique way of painting of wood products, that imitated gilding.

Hohloma products are popular all over the world. They attract, first of all, with their original coloring. The traditional pattern of climber plants and flowers, festive elegant color of painting, that is based on a combination of red, black and gold, giving the real jewel to Hohloma. Hohloma products, glittering with gold and splendor of varnishes, pleasant with colorful, poetic painting, became the subject of collecting long time ago. The collection of National Culture Centre, which has been collected for ten years, is considered to be one of the best in Latvia. It includes a variety of items – decorative vases, plates and ladles, spoons, salt shakers, sets of dishes for fish soup, honey, berries and kvass, and also multi-disciplinary sets intended for the holiday table. Hohloma chamber is not only an exhibition hall, but also an original cafe. Here, the employees of center receive numerous guests, who are necessarily entertained with pancakes and fragrant tea. Children’s events, lectures on folk art for pupils, friend ‘gatherings’ and other interesting events take place there. In addition, chamber is a wonderful place for original presentations, small banquets and corporate parties.

Orthodoxy in Latgale
In one of the exhibition halls of center there is an exhibition “Orthodoxy in Latvia. Origins and Modernity”. Its main adornment is the unique collection of ancient icons that center received as a gift in 2005. Prayer books and church utensils, as well as archival documents and modern publications on the history and traditions of the Orthodox Church complete the collection. In addition, in the National Culture Centre there is an extensive collection of historical materials, which show that Orthodoxy in our country has deeper roots than it is commonly believed.

According to historians, the first Christian church that was built on the territory of modern Latvia, was Orthodox. It was built in the valley of the river Daugava presumably for a century – a century and a half before the Northern Crusades of the 13th century. In those days, there were several large fiefdoms – Jersika, Koknese and Talava. The rulers of these principalities, having decided to spread Christianity in their lands, adopted Orthodoxy from the Russian people. In “Chronicle of Livonia” it is said that already in the 12th century Jersika and Koknese were not only fortified castles, but cities with many houses and Orthodox churches. The divine services in the temples were organized by both Russian and Latgalian priests. The memory about it has remained in the Latvian language. Many of the words associated with Christianity – “icon shelf” (baznīca), “cross” (krusts), “holy” (svēts), “candle” (svece), “fast” (postenis), “sin” (grēks) and others were borrowed by Latvians from the Russian language.

Old Belief in Latvia
In the ancient handwritten book “Chronicler Degutskij” it is stated that the first Old Believers, who did not accept the church reforms of Patriarch Nikon and therefore were persecuted in their motherland, appeared in the vicinity of Dinaburg in 1659. Most of them settled on the left bank of the river Daugava in the village of Liginishki, where in the summer of 1660, the first Old Believer’s church on the territory of Latvia was built. Since then, more than three centuries has passed. All this time, the descendants of the Old Believers settlers have carefully preserved their “old faith”, distinct culture, language, traditions and customs, crafts and artistic trades. They built temples decorated with unique iconostases, created religious communities, which became significant spiritual and cultural centers. The study of the history and culture of Old Believer community in our country is one of the main activities of National Culture Centre. In ten years, the staff of the center was able to collect a lot of archival documents, exhibits and other materials on this topic. On their basis, the permanent exhibition “The spiritual and material culture of Old Belief in Latvia” is created in National Culture Centre. In the extensive exhibition there are ancient and modern icons, unique samples of writing on the basis of which in these days the lists of ancient icons are written down, church clothes and utensils (censers, candlesticks, hand assistant, leaflets etc.), old manuscripts and printed prayer books, modern publications (calendars, journals, educational literature, historical and cultural studies). The exhibition also introduces the daily life of Old Believers. There are demonstrations of various household items: clothes (children’s “dresses”, hand-embroidered shirts, dresses etc.), household utensils (dishes, embroidered towels, wooden mortar, spinning wheel, antique irons) and other items of the household use, that reflect the deep traditionality of artistic samples of folk decorative and applied art.

The Daugavpils Fortress Visitors Centre is located in the historic Water Lifting House, whose foundations were laid in 1865. In the past, this building supplied water to the entire fortress and powered the fountain on the fortress boulevard. According to the records of the Russian State Archive of War and History, by 1889 the fortress already had a functioning water supply system. Water from three wells on the bank of the Daugava River was pumped into a 3,000‑bucket reservoir inside the building using a steam engine — a massive riveted metal water tank. It has been preserved in excellent condition and today serves as a symbolic reminder of the building’s historical significance.

The restoration of the building took place from 2009 to 2011 as part of the project “Model Restoration and Management of the Water Tower Building in the Daugavpils Fortress”, co‑financed by the European Economic Area and the Norwegian government’s bilateral financial instrument. The restored building was officially opened on 29 April 2011.

A new and modern exhibition about crafts and lifestyle is available for viewing in the House of Traditions. The exhibition of crafts and life skills is dedicated to the world of the Latgalian farmstead – a place where people’s everyday life, work and family life took place throughout the seasons. The exhibition offers a modern perspective on ancient craft skills, allowing them to be explored through visual images, sound, action and interactive stories. The center of the exhibition is an interactive installation that allows visitors to choose which stories to follow – about work on the farm, the rhythm of the seasons, or craft skills that have shaped the way of life of Latgale from generation to generation.
