Game Description
People say that Daugavpils, much like Mark Rothko’s color palette, has many shades. During this orienteering game, participants have the chance to experience the city’s diversity — discovering not only its well‑known landmarks but also its hidden gems and unexpected artworks.

One of the stops on the route is the so‑called “student area”, where your attention may be drawn to the figure of Pavel Dubrovin with his four‑legged companion, the residents of the Latgale Zoo, or the exhibition visible through the window of the Shmakovka Museum. The game challenges not only your navigation skills in an urban environment but also your knowledge of various historical and cultural facts.

To ensure an engaging and unpredictable experience, the route includes both permanent objects and those that may change over time. This means that some items mentioned in the tasks may have disappeared, been replaced, demolished, repainted, or damaged. Weather conditions — rain, snow, or fog — may also affect access to or visibility of certain locations.

What is Roadgames?
Roadgames is an interactive team‑based orienteering and adventure game played in the real world through a mobile app. It combines city exploration with educational and creative challenges, allowing players to discover new places while moving on foot, by car, or by bike.

The games are designed for friends, families, and corporate team‑building. Participants download the app, create a team, and navigate the map while collecting points for completing tasks.

How to participate?
To join the game, you need to download the Roadgames app. Once the game begins, the map and tasks become available in the app. Participants must travel to the marked locations to complete on‑site challenges, as well as take part in additional tasks that are not tied to a specific spot.

Mežciems Park is a place for walking and relaxation in the historic sanatorium area in the Mežciems neighbourhood, which is situated on the picturesque banks of the Daugava River. The park is located 8 km from the centre of Daugavpils.

About Mežciems Sanatorium
The history of Mežciems Sanatorium began in 1883, when the Poguļanka water and kumis healing resort was opened on the banks of the Daugava River. Its founder was Count Jan Kazimierz Jozef Plater-Zyberk (1850-1922), owner of the Līksna estate. Since then, Poguļanka (the name of the area until 1937) has been known as a health resort.

The healing resort used a special drink called kumis, made from mare’s milk, therapeutic mud taken from the nearby Trikartu lakes, and mineral water. Kumis was made on site in Poguļanka, where 90 mares were kept specifically for the production of mare’s milk, which was poured into large baths to be turned into kumis.

In 1886, the Count established a steamboat route between the city and the resort.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a large water, mud, and air baths building, a kumis and kefir “institution”, an eye clinic, its own pharmacy, library, theatre, and much more. A well-maintained park was established for walks in Poguļanka, which was lit by electric lamps in the evening hours, as the resort had its own power station.

The early 20th century until World War I was the golden age of the resort, both as a health institution and as a magnificent and well-equipped place for recreation and entertainment. At that time, two steamboats and a motorboat already ran from Dinaburg to Poguļanka. Concerts and theatre performances featuring famous European artists took place here, as well as grand receptions hosted by Count Plater-Zyberk with balls and festive dinners.

After World War I, the resort was closed for a long time. The war had severely damaged the medical buildings and summer houses, and the situation was further affected by the agrarian reform that began in 1920, which meant that the Plater-Zyberk family lost the Līksna estate and extensive lands, including the resort.

In 1937, Poguļanka was renamed to Mežciems. In 1939, the building of the sanatorium was renovated. It had 27 rooms, where therapeutic mud and other procedures were carried out. People came to Mežciems for treatments from various cities in Latvia.

However, further development of this place was interrupted by World War II. From 1947, the sanatorium began treating tuberculosis patients and organising pioneer camps, and from 1959, it began treating patients with cardiovascular diseases. In the early 1990s, the Mežciems Sanatorium was closed.

The sanatorium territory today
Currently, the Mežciems Park territory is cleaned. The park is a great place for peaceful walks, exploring history, and enjoying nature. The historic sanatorium building and adjacent buildings, which can be viewed from the outside, give the strolls along the park paths a special atmosphere. The park offers a beautiful view of the Daugava River, making it a good place to enjoy nature in peace and silence. It is advisable to visit the park during daylight hours, as it is not illuminated in the evening.

Raiņa Centre operates under the Latgale Central Library and offers interactive guided tours and cultural activities. Visitors can explore the history, cultural heritage, and notable personalities of the left bank of the Daugava River in Daugavpils.

The centre’s exhibition is dedicated to three notable personalities connected with this historical school: the Latvian poet, playwright, translator, theatre practitioner, journalist, and politician Jānis Pliekšāns – Rainis; the botanist, mathematician, and philosopher Kārlis Reinholds Kupfers; and the graphic artist Rihards Zariņš, one of the creators of the Latvian national coat of arms and the author of designs for banknotes, securities, and coins. The centre offers guided tours and creative workshops for school groups, families, and adult visitors.

Permanent Exhibition
Raiņa Centre is located in the building of the former Grīva German School and Rainis Secondary School No. 6. Many outstanding personalities studied here, and their achievements in various fields have made a significant contribution to the development of Latvian culture and science.

Guided Tour “Different Times – Different School”
During the tour, participants learn how schools developed in the Daugavpils area, what characterised German schools in the 19th century, and which subjects Rainis studied. Visitors can explore the most interesting historical events and secrets of the school building and its surroundings, and take part in practical activities by tackling tasks from old school subjects such as calligraphy, poetry writing, rhetoric, or natural sciences.

The tour is available in Latvian, Russian, and English.
Group size: 6–30 participants (larger groups are divided into two).
Materials are included in the ticket price.
Duration: 1 hour.

Creative Workshops
In the workshop “Let’s Get Acquainted – GRAPHICS!” participants explore the works of R. Zariņš, the types of seals created by R. Kupfers, the diversity of graphic techniques, and create their own graphic artwork. Each workshop focuses on creative experimentation and discovering materials and techniques, inspired by the unique legacy of Rainis, Kupfers, and Zariņš. Raiņa Centre provides all necessary materials.

Latgale’s Wetland Biodiversity Park is a place that not only provides shelter for many rare and protected species of animals and plants, but is also an area that provides residents and visitors of the city with recreation, ecological learning and other ecosystem services. Moreover, it is located almost in the very centre of Daugavpils.

Daugavpils is a rare city in Latvia and even in Europe, which can be proud of a colony of seagulls, bog turtles, jackdaws, small pipits and other animals that live right in the centre of the city. That is why the Wetland Park can be safely called a unique tourist and natural object.

In the swampy area of the park, next to the Latgale Zoo, there is a Wetland Trail, which is about one and a half kilometres long. The trail is equipped with several observation platforms and shelters, allowing to observe birds and animals.

It offers two options for exploring wetland life: a leisurely stroll along a well-maintained trail or an explorer-style adventure route. It is possible to book a tour with the guide in order to explore the territory of the Wetland Park. Information about the tours is available in Latgale Zoo or by phone: +371 65426789.

The trail has several entrances:

•  at the observation hill – from the side of Esplanade Park and Kandavas Street;
• at the Daugavas Street footpath – next to the sewage treatment plant area;
• at the Daugavas Street footpath – next to the dog walking area;
• from the side of Latgale Zoo.

The trail is equipped with bicycle stands, information boards and signs providing information on possible directions of the trail.

A special trail, the Biologist’s Trail, is also built in the Wetland Park in Esplanade. It is a fascinating and informative route, which can be wet and flooded at times, with possible obstacles such as fallen trees, branches, animals and traces of their activity, as well as reeds. That is why the Biologist’s Trail can only be accessed with a guide. Guide services are offered by Latgale Zoo, you can book an excursion by phone +371 65426789.

The Wetland Trail is suitable for mums with prams and wheelchair users. The exception is the Biologist’s Trail route.

A river-bank promenade was created on the right bank of the River Daugava alongside the fortress citadel in 2021. The total length of the promenade is around 1 kilometre, it goes on the upper level of the protection dam around the fortress.

The promenade begins in the place of a harbour where boats and floating bridge parts were kept in the 19th century, and ends near the historical water outlet where water is gathered from the entire citadel protective moat. It is possible to see the Fortress model in the harbour territory. In the central part of the promenade, everyone can see the original round-stone pavement that used to cover the whole protective dam and the passage till the floating bridge. Here also one of the historical wells is renovated that was used to pump water to the fortress water-main in the 19th century.

The fortress promenade is a great place for leisurely walks, to view fortress fortifications on both banks of the River Daugava, as well as to enjoy sunsets and slow flow of the river. A car and bicycle parking spot is available at each end of the promenade.

Paintball

Paintball is a sports game where participants shoot balls at each other using air guns. If a player is hit by a ball , he is considered to be hit and must leave the field until the next round. One game usually lasts about 10 minutes. The maximum shooting range is 50 metres.

As in other active sports, in paintball it is important to wear special equipment to protect against injury. Paintball can be played from the age of 12, but all safety rules must be strictly observed. “FOXWAR” playground and camouflage suits allow you to camouflage well and play tactical paintball.

Center of Technics and Industrial design «Engineering arsenal» is the largest exhibition of motorized vehicles in Latgale region. It is a unique exhibition space of retro technology and applied design, which is located in the historic 19th-century building of the Daugavpils Fortress.

Four exhibition zones with a total area of 2500 sq.m. await its visitors: «Industrial design and Special vehicles», «Soviet vehicles», «Moto vehicles» and «Western retro car» sectors. In total, the center houses more than 40 retro cars, more than 80 motorcycles and mopeds, a large number of accessories, car and moto-models. A special role is dedicated to industrial heritage of Daugavpils city. Together it all forms a story about the development of technology and design in the region, Latvia and the world in total.

The First World War has left long-lasting scars not only in people’s destinies and hearts, but also in a large territory of present-day Latvia and Lithuania, where the so-called fronts were located for several years, including the “Life and Death” line. A complex system of fortifications with ditches, trenches and bunkers was built on both sides of the front line. Thousands of soldiers fought and died in fierce battles here, which is evidenced by the countless burials of fallen soldiers. Many concrete bunkers, impressive cannon and ammunition storages, and endless twists and turns of trenches built by German soldiers have survived to this day in the forests of Demene, Svente and Medumi Parishes of Daugavpils District.

Exhibition which is 113 sq.m. large consists of two thematic blocks. The first part is devoted to the events of the First World War in Europe and Latvia. The visitors can get familiar with the life of soldiers, with the innovations that arose during the First World War, as well as study what weapons were used by the German and Russian Armies. On the other hand, the visitors of the second thematic block have the opportunity to assume the role of a soldier and experience first-hand the everyday life at the bunker. An imitation of a Russian bunker has been created in the hall – a fragment of a trench with a small dugout, war attributes and soldier mannequins. A bunker of the Russian Army has been made because they were built of wood and have not been preserved to this day, while the concrete bunkers of the German Army can be seen in life by visiting the international route through the bunkers of the First World War. Much attention is paid to audio and video equipment in the hall with an imitation of a bunker as it gives visitors the opportunity to feel the atmosphere of the battlefield. Modern design makes the exhibition interesting and easy to understand for different audiences. However, more attention is paid to school-aged children, for whom visiting the exhibition is like a repetition of what they learn in history lessons.

In the information center of the Dviete floodplain “Gulbji” the exposition of the symbol of Bebrene and an inhabitant of the Dviete floodplain has been created. It introduces the Eurasian beaver, its history and lifestyle, habits, bad and good deeds. Variants of how to live with a beaver and use it effectively are suggested.

The exposition offers:

• learn many facts about the life of beavers;
• see and touch beaver fur, teeth and gnawed trees;

The boat “Dinaburga” started its journey along the picturesque river Daugava on April 30, 2022. It is a great opportunity to get to know the cultural and historical heritage and the most beautiful and richest part of the Daugava with your own eyes.

There are offered regular boat trips on the Daugava, in Naujene parish, Augsdaugava district. The boat accommodates guests in a comfortable salon, with drop-down transparent walls, salon heating, an audio system, blankets for colder days and an always smiling captain.

On weekdays, the boat runs on a request, by previous reservation, but on weekends, from 10:00 to 19:00 every hour. The boat can accommodate 20 passengers and a captain.

The Children and Youth Center of Ilūkste houses an ancient artifact collection called the “Sēlian Room,” which has been developed over many years, gathering and preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Sēlija and Ilūkste. The collection features displays of cameras, clocks, money, postcards, linen towels, and radios.

Here, you can explore traditional Sēlian patterns in gloves and socks, century-old national skirts, as well as modern knitting from the handicraft club “Dzīparu namiņš.” You can also view interesting and rare household items.

Daugavpils Fortress Visitors Centre presents historical exposition – “Nicholas Gates – a door to the past”, which is located in Nicholas Gates in Daugavpils Fortress.

Historically four gates were built in Daugavpils Fortress but only Nicholas Gates different from the others with their unique external appearance and the presence of side rooms. In the past, these side rooms were used as a guardhouses and short-term prison rooms.  But nowadays they have also found application. A souvenir shop and a Bat Centre have been located at the gates for several years. The other empty rooms of the gates were turned into a small historical exhibition where large number of artifacts can be seen. History enthusiasts will be able to find many interesting things there. The exhibition includes fortress plans, Soviet army uniforms, a collection of historic bricks and trim, historic windows and doors of civilian buildings and fortifications, and more.

The Pilskalne Siguldiņa Nature Reserve (59.3 ha) is located in a picturesque valley carved by the meltwaters of glaciers. This area has been a nature reserve since 2003 when it was included in the Natura 2000 list of European protected areas. The reserve features 11 European Union priority habitats, 21 rare or protected plant species, 7 rare or protected lichen species, and a rich diversity of plants in and around the lakes. Several exciting walking and educational trails have been established in the reserve.

“Sprīdītis” Trail (1.6 km): Starting at a small water reservoir, this trail features 32 wooden sculptures of characters from A. Brigadere’s fairy tale “Sprīdītis”. The Black Hill is under national protection and is an archaeological monument. Historically, a Sēlian wooden fortress stood on this steep hill, existing for an extended period. Archaeological findings include fragments of pottery, both incised and plastered, as well as other evidence. These discoveries suggest the presence of Baltic tribes in the area. The cultural layer and a significant amount of charcoal found in the soil near the hill by the Dubupīte stream may explain the hill’s name, “Melnais kalns” (Black Hill).

“Dendrological and Geographical Route” (3.8 km): This circular trail introduces visitors to 28 dendrological, 10 geological, and cultural-historical sites. The route takes 2-3 hours to complete, showcasing impressive ancient trees, oak bridges formed by intertwined branches, and a variety of tree species.

“Historical Witnesses” Trail (0.6 km): Continuing from the dendrological route, this trail runs along a pristine section of old-growth forest and highlights remnants of German army fortifications from World War I.

“Bog” Trail (approx. 6 km, including a 600 m wooden boardwalk):This trail offers an exciting opportunity to explore bog plant life and discover insect-eating plants, such as sundews.

The creators of the Museum of the World War I “Pie Komendanta” offer sightseeing tours in Daugavpils Fortress on an electric bus. During the trip, guests and residents of the city will be introduced to the most interesting and significant objects of Daugavpils Fortress and their history. The route leads through the streets of Daugavpils Fortress and includes such objects as officers’ houses, soldiers’ barracks, military hospital building, fortress garden, powder magazines, memorial sites, casemates, fortress gates, fortifications, and much more. During the trip some recently restored objects in the fortress can be seen, such as Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, Nicholas Gates, water lifting house, Commandant’s House etc. places. There are stops during the tour and you can go for a walk to see the fortifications of the fortress.

The childhood of the outstanding Latvian poet, translator, master of drama, public and political figure Rainis (1865 – 1929) was spent here, in the Berkenele Half-manor. Here the poet’s personality and worldview began to form and the first verses were born. Those memories reflect in Rainis anthology of poetry “Five Sketch-books of Dagda”. Expositions devoted to the poet and different art exhibitions take place in the manor now. It is possible to order excursions, participate in workshops and organize seminars.

The ancient craft workshop “Klēts” has been established in the House of Rainis in Berkenele. On the first floor of the building there is an exposition of various ancient crafts and a multifunctional room for organizing various events. The attic is divided into two parts – one of them is an exhibition hall, but in the smallest part of the attic there is a heated room – a workshop, where in summer and winter craftsmen can work, but visitors can learn various skills of ancient crafts.

Music Square in Esplanade Rest Park is a place for rest and walks in Daugavpils. The central theme of this recreation and walking area is the sounds of music in an urban environment. This is very symbolic, as the Square is located directly opposite Staņislavs Broks Daugavpils Music Secondary School.

There are various music instruments placed in the open air that allow to both hear and feel the music in its various forms. There are 10 different musical instruments – drums, xylophone, tube bells and other interesting objects.

People in this unusual place may witness how music is born, and also create a beautiful melody. Both those who are familiar with music, and those who are just beginning to get familiar with the diverse world of sounds can make sure of the sound quality: sheet music is placed on the instruments in order to help to reproduce world-famous compositions even for the youngest music lovers.

In addition to musical instruments, benches and waste bins, information signs and stands are placed in the Square. There is also a bicycle parking place. The area is designed in such a way that it is convenient for parents with prams and people with disabilities.

“RetroGaraž-D” is a collection of retro cars and Soviet-era items. Different automobile brands are represented in the exhibition – 22 “Moskvich”, 2 “Zhiguli”, “Volga” and “Mercedes” cars. This is probably the largest “Moskvich” collection in the Baltic States. One of the oldest cars in the collection was produced in 1947, a post-war car, which is also a copy of the car brand “Opel”.

Lielais Stropu Lake – the largest water body in Daugavpils, located 8 km from the city centre, attracts a large number of holidaymakers in the summer season. There is a 3,3 km long promenade along the shore of the lake. By walking along the promenade from the Central Beach to the left, you can reach the beach “Stropu vilnis”, where the adventure park “Daugavpils Tarzāns” and a camping site are located. The promenade along the lake goes to Daugavpils Regional Hospital and ends in Vecstropi neighbourhood.

The promenade is a 4.5 m wide asphalt path with separate lanes for pedestrians, roller skaters and cyclists and is illuminated at night. Bicycle racks and benches are installed along the entire promenade.

The main feature of the recreation area in Stropi are the two open-air swimming pools floating in the lake, located on the Central Beach. They are part of a unique pontoon structure comprising a 25-metre-long outdoor pool, jumping tower, children’s pool with integrated depth limitation base, relaxation area with umbrellas and sun loungers. The central beach is divided into zones. There are grilling areas and tables. There is an equipped children’s playground, beach volleyball court, parking, toilets and changing rooms. The beach offers a wide range of entertainment and recreation opportunities: summer cafe, electric scooters, electric bikes and go-karts rental, sports equipment rental for surfing. There is a fountain on the Central Beach.

The promenade of Stropu Lake is also accessible for people with limited mobility because of the pavement, which is lined at one level. In addition, a special recreation and swimming area has been created on the Central Beach for people with special needs.

There is a Stropu Forest next to the lake, Open Air Stropu Bandstand and Active Rest and Sports Track.

The most convenient way to go to Central Beach is by private car, tram No. 3 or No. 5 (get off at the “Stropu ezers” stop) or bus No. 3 and No. 12 (get off at the “Internātskola” stop).

Central Beach can also be reached by bicycle if you follow the regional cycle route No. 35 “Daugavas Loki”. The cycle route is marked with appropriate signs along the entire length. A bicycle parking rack is available at the beach.

“Restime Daugavpils” offers boat trips along Daugava River with a “Sikspārnis” boat.

The boat was created by the entrepreneur “Restime Daugavpils” from Daugavpils, who has been providing tourist services and offering opportunities for active recreation for several years.

The name “Sikspārnis” (“Bat”) is given in honour of bats that live in the territory of the fortress and are one of the symbols of Daugavpils Fortress. The boat “Sikspārnis” is decorated with various wood carvings, the bat as a symbol, there are shields on one side of the ship, the inscription “I love Daugavpils” is inside, as well as a Viking is depicted in wood carving.

During the trip, passengers can see the Unity Bridge, Daugavpils districts, Daugavpils Fortress and get to know the biological diversity of the river and its coasts. Passengers can enjoy a picnic on the water with food or a hot drink and admire the beauty of the Daugava River.

The maximum number of passengers on the boat “Sikspārnis”: 13.
Trips can be booked by groups for celebrations, hen and stag parties by prior arrangement.

On the right bank of the Daugava River, in the vicinity of Gayok district the Bruģu Street promenade has been built.  It is aimed at giving the streets a new, functional look and meaning. After completion of the Bruģu Street promenade, Daugavpils city acquired a new, facilitated area for strolling and enjoying the splendour of nature.

The promenade on Bruģu Street is located in the street section from 18. Novembra Street to Ūdensvada Street, as well as on Dzirnavu Street  from Bruģu Street to Vidus Street, forming a 1.2 km long promenade along the Daugava River. Pedestrian and bicycle lanes have been built along the entire promenade, a new road surface has been laid, rainwater drains and street lights have been installed. Railings, several benches and bicycle stands have been installed along the entire promenade for the safety of pedestrians. Also,  greening has been carried out, as well as outdoor workout equipment for active recreation has been provided.

In order to make the promenade visually attractive, drawings with historical motifs of Gayok district have been created on the long concrete wall, replacing the old graffiti drawings on the fence along the adjacent companies.

The author of the sketches is Inguna Levsa, the chief municipal artist, who encouraged a group of artists-enthusiasts to create those wall drawings. Drawings occupy only a small part of the promenade wall. It is likely that in the future it will be supplemented by new drawings.

It took a year to complete the construction of the Bruģu Street promenade. The construction work was carried out by road construction company SIA “Binders”. Most of the funding for Bruģu Street revitalisation project was obtained from the ERDF.

The recreation place “Latgales sēta” is located on the shore of Daugava River in Slutiski, Naujene parish.

This place was provided with the necessary infrastructure in order to take visitors, both local inhabitants and tourists, during the active holiday season.

This recreation place can be interesting for people of all ages, and not only adults but also children will find some activities here. Here was created also a playground for children, as well as the gates, which will only be opened in special cases, because the place is separated from a road. There was created also a walking trail.

Where it was possible, the materials of the objects were chosen from wood to be as close as it is possible to the surrounding environment, while one of the main and visible objects, the newly built stage, is made of concrete. This stage was necessary for the organization of cultural events, and if up to now the biggest cultural event of the district, the Festival “Augšdaugava”, has had problems with the placement of dancers and techniques, then these problems are now resolved.

The active rest and sports track is located in the Daugavpils Stropi Forest. The length is approximately three kilometres (1.1 km – elevation, 2.8 km – plain). The track is fully illuminated and it is intended for cyclists, for roller skiers, skaters, runners and Nordic walkers.

There are opportunities for skiing in wintertime. A ski track is available for freestyle skiers. The ski track is maintained by the “Stiga” orientation club.

Every day a lot of people come to the track to spend their spare time. The Lielais Stropu Lake, the hostel of “Dzintariņš” Sports Complex, “Chill&Grill” camping and “Daugavpils Tarzāns” adventure park is located near the track.

For additional convenience, beach locker rooms, benches, parking spaces and other amenities are available for guests. There is a “SÅN Beach Club” summer cafe where you can refresh yourself with cold drinks and ice cream.

A unique lake pontoon construction is available for visitors of the beach. Lielais Stropu Lake is the largest water body in Daugavpils that attracts many holidaymakers during the summer season. Every year International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) designates a Blue Flag Award for high environmental and quality standards to Central Beach of Lielais Stropu Lake.

Central Beach of Lielais Stropu Lake offers a wide choice of leisure activities for everyone, for example, a pedestrian route for walks, which is illuminated at night, a bicycle path for cyclists, an open area for sports activities with the outdoor exercise equipment, a free beach volleyball court and other. Adventure park “Daugavpils Tarzāns” is located near the Stropu Lake in Daugavpils. The obstacle park is a great adventure for both children and adults.

The park is made of 8 obstacle tracks with different degrees of difficulty.  The green track is an adventure track for children with 16 different obstacles. For adults this will be a proper warm-up before going up higher. The two blue tracks are created with relatively easy to overcome obstacles raised up to five meters above the ground. The red track is set 10 m above the ground and includes a jump in the net with “Tarzāns” rope, flying skateboard and other exciting obstacles. The black track suits for those who seek challenges. This track requires physical strength and coordination since there are 14 high-intensity obstacles that are placed 12 m above the ground.

The adventure park is equipped with the new generation security system “Speedrunner” from the Swiss company “Kanopeo”. The most important benefit of the new system is that it prevents risk of unfastened safety belts. Continued connection with safety cable throughout the track ensures a safe adventure.

In 2019, a new track was opened in the adventure park – a net route. The net route offers an amazing new way of enjoying activities at the height of 7m, manoeuvring through the nets, jumping or relaxing. The ball field is interesting for both children and adults. Unlike the obstacle park, you will be completely surrounded by 2.5m high net walls, which means you can enjoy a fun adventure with the whole family, friends or a team.

Esplanade Rest Park is the first bike park in the Baltics covering an area of 4 hectares in the urban environment. This park includes a variety of areas – a skatepark, an asphalted cycling track, an adventure trail and a children’s area. The park is multifunctional and is adapted for 8 different vehicles – mtb, bmx, street, balance bike, skateboard, longboard, roller skates and scooter. There are many walking trails so this park is accessible to both locals and city guests.

A skatepark is a reinforced concrete structure. A visual and functional solution of the skatepark goes hand in hand with the city overview. Each edge of the stucture delights park users.

The cycling track is the place for active rest and it is adapted for cyclists of all ages and cycling levels. This is specially constructed asphalt track that consist of the mounds of various sizes, turns and small jumps. The cycling track can be seen freely from any point so there is no risk of collision. There is soft lawn around the track.

The children’s cycling track is similar to cycling track for adults however only in smaller sizes. The height of the mounds is less than 30 cm, they are gentle and suitable for children’s level.

Skills park is only for cyclists. An interesting approach and integration of different structures – all it makes the trip exciting. Skills park is nature and environmentally friendly and it perfectly integrates into the landscape.

Music Square in Esplanade Rest Park is a place for rest and walks in Daugavpils. The central theme of this recreation and walking area is the sounds of music in an urban environment. The Swamp Trail is a unique tourist and nature exploration object. The Swamp Trail is a 1.5-kilometre-long trail with several viewing platforms and hides for bird and animal watching. The trail is located in the Esplanade Wetland next to the Latgale Zoo. You can explore the diverse life of the swamp’s inhabitants in two ways: by taking a leisurely stroll along the well-maintained trail, or by taking on the role of a field researcher and choosing an adventurous route.

The Daugava is a great place to enjoy the beautiful and diverse landscapes of Latvian nature. Daugavpils Fortress is a place where the second largest in the Baltic States hibernating bat colony inhabits. The fortress walls with high humidity, as well as a special microclimate in the fortifications create favourable conditions for dwelling.

Exposition of the Daugavpils Bat Centre which is located in the lateral room of the Niсholas Gate in Daugavpils Fortress provides an opportunity to explore the way bats live, to see thematic stamp collection, artwork depicting bats, as well as pictures and informative materials that characterise the life of these animals in the Daugavpils Fortress.

Daugavpils Bat Centre offers both day and night excursions during the summer season (May – September) because it is prohibited to disturb bats over the winter. The tours are held in order to explore the bats, to find out what they eat, how they hibernate and breed, as well as where they live. More about the fortress:
An equally important part of the fortress ensemble is its internal development. Around 80 buildings have been preserved here to this day, connected by ten streets, each of which still retains its historical name. At present, the fortress infrastructure is being restored, and its buildings are experiencing a period of revival. One such site is the former water lifting house, which now houses the Daugavpils Fortress Visitors Centre. The restored Commandant’s House currently accommodates the Latgale Regional Administration and the Daugavpils Department of the State Police, while the Artillery Arsenal building is used by the Rothko Museum. In 2023, the former Engineering Arsenal was transformed into the Centre of Technics and Industrial Design “Engineering Arsenal”, offering a contemporary perspective on the historical environment.

In recent years, several other significant objects of the fortress have also been restored. The Nicholas Gate, which in 2013 was recognised as Latvia’s best restoration project, has been renovated, as well as the wooden bridge that once connected the gate with the first riverside lunette. The guardhouse of the lunette has also undergone restoration, along with the rampart of the 7th bastion — a stretch of about 400 meters featuring casemates, which now house an exhibition of contemporary ceramics. A permanent exhibition dedicated to the renowned Latvian ceramicist Pēteris Martinsons — “Martinsons House” — has been created in the former gunpowder cellar. These projects have significantly reshaped the appearance of the fortress, making it even more attractive to visitors.

In 2018, the Daugavpils Fortress regeneration project was awarded the Council of Europe Landscape Award.

Construction of the fortress began in 1810 to protect the western borders of the Russian Empire in anticipation of the war with Napoleon. The project was entrusted to military engineer Major General Heckel, and in total, around 10,000 people took part in building the fortress, working continuously in two shifts. Immediately after the end of the War of 1812, construction resumed, and up until the beginning of the First World War, the fortress housed a garrison of the Imperial Russian Army. In total, the fortress could accommodate up to six thousand people.

In 1920, units of the Latvian Army were stationed in the fortress — specifically, three infantry regiments and one artillery regiment of the 4th Zemgale Division.

In 1940, the Red Army took over the Daugavpils Fortress. The previous garrison was disbanded, and the Latvian Army regiments left the site. During the Second World War, a prisoner‑of‑war camp for Soviet soldiers, “Stalag‑340”, was established on the fortress grounds. A Jewish ghetto operated in the bridgehead area, where Jews from Daugavpils and the surrounding regions, as well as from Lithuania, were brought. From 1948 to 1994, the Daugavpils Higher Military Aviation Engineering School was located in the fortress.

Today, the fortress is a city district with more than a thousand residents.

In recent years, the fortress has been developing rapidly and attracting an increasing number of visitors from Latvia and abroad. Numerous projects aimed at improving and revitalising the fortress and its surrounding area are actively being implemented. More and more families choose this place for walks, outdoor recreation, and photoshoots.

The fortress hosts a wide range of events at the city, national, and international level. Every year it hosts Museum Night as well as the European Heritage Days.

In 2015, a new tradition emerged in the fortress — the historical reenactment festival “Dinaburga 1812”. During this event, visitors can watch a reenactment of the 1812 events, when the French army advanced, and the fortress was bravely defended by Russian forces. In addition to the reenactment, the festival offers a wide range of activities for guests of all ages — both children and adults.

At the Fortress Visitor Centre, you can learn about its history and development, discover upcoming improvement projects for the area, and find information about future events. The centre also features an exhibition dedicated to the fortress, as well as maps and other tourist materials available for visitors.

During the active tourist season, the guardhouse building is also open to visitors.

In 2024, Daugavpils Fortress joined the Association of Latvian Castles and Manors.

In 2025, the fortress became a member of the European cultural network of fortified heritage “FORTE CULTURA”, as well as the European Federation of Fortified Sites “EFFORTS”.

Located near the bus station. The park designed by Selecky was developed on the site of residential blocks completely destroyed during the Second World War. This modern park with numerous flower beds and plants is a real jewel in the heart of the city. Playground for children and chess club are placed in the park. The Bench alley and the Tree of Love were placed here in 2012. The city Ice Palace is located right next to the park.

The Daugavpils Theatre is one of the oldest professional theatres in Latvia. It is the only professional theatre in Latgale. In Latvia, it is the only theatre where both Latvian and Russian companies of actors work simultaneously. Its repertoire includes plays in the Latvian, Latgalian and Russian languages.

The exposition consists of World War II tanks (heavyweight tank IS-2 – “Joseph Stalin”, medium-weight tank T-34), combat vehicles (the landing craft BRDM -2, BRDM -1), military transport vehicles (“Villis” – Jeep Willys, GAZ – 67). The Soviet Army military equipment has been restored, and some of the exhibits can be geared.

The museum is dedicated to the first awakening movement “Atmoda” figures – Skrinda brothers – Benedikts (1869–1947), Kazimirs (1875–1919) and Antons (1881–1918).

The museum offers to see different exhibitions and welcomes students and adults to participate in many thematic programmes. It is possible to taste traditional meal of Latgale “komas” and herbal tea, get acquainted with old crafts and spend time together with craftsmen. The biggest number of Daugavpils District crucifixes is preserved in Vabole Parish. Information about the “Crucifix Way” excursion route is available in the museum. For the museum programmes pre-order is needed.

The permanent exhibition tells about the life and work of the Skrinda family. You can see exhibitions about the history and the present time of Liksna and Vabole Parish, as well as century old furniture and different objects.

Slutiski old believers’ village is situated in Slutiski, Naujene parish, on the right bank of the Daugava river. In Naujene Local History Museum holdings for the fшrst time Slutiski as a village was mentioned in 1785.
Rectangle log house buildings covered with gabled of for-sided roof are on the basis of all buildings. Decoration of houses is similar to our neighbours, wood carving masters – the Slavs. Slavonic architectural traditions basically are expressed in magnificent decorations of facades, window frames and doors.
In 1986 archaeological excavations were carried out on village’s territory. Burials (15th- 17th century) were discovered there. From 1998 the village is considered as an ethnographical monument.

In Slutišķi village it is possible to see outdoor exposition “Rural Court of Slutiški”– unique example of spiritual and household culture. Exposition consists from two parts: “Old Believers’ House” and “Horse harnesses and tools in Daugavpils region”.

* The museum is setting a Guinness World Record by creating Augsdaugava Big Quilt. The aim is to create the biggest quilt in Latvia by involving as many people as possible. It is planned to stretch the quilt above the Daugava River from one river bank to another. To join this action you need to chochet, knit or weave one square of 10×10 cm or 20×20 cm. At this moment 5000 people are involved in the action and 300 m are knitted.

The childhood of the outstanding Latvian poet, translator, master of drama, public and political figure Rainis (1865 – 1929) has spent here, in the Berkenele Half-manor. Here the poet’s personality and worldview began to form and the first verses were born. Memories from here reflect in Rainis anthology of poetry “Five Sketch-books of Dagda”. Expositions devoted to the poet and different art exhibitions take a place in the manor now. It is possible to order excursions, participate in workshops and organize seminars, too.
