During the First World War, the front line of “Life and Death” was located on the territory of Latvia and Lithuania for several years. A complex system of fortifications with ditches, trenches and bunkers was built on both sides of it. Thousands of soldiers fought and died in fierce battles here, as evidenced by the countless burials of fallen soldiers.

The First World War has left long-lasting scars not only in people’s destinies and hearts, but also in our land. Until our days, in the forests of Medumi parish in Augsdaugava district, countless bunkers, cannon and ammunition storages, trenches and graves of soldiers who fought on both sides of the front have been preserved until our days.

During the route, it is possible to see several better-preserved bunkers, as well as the expositions of the First World War in Medumi and Turmantas (Lithuania), dedicated to the First World War. The exposition in Turmantas is already open and invites visitors to view interesting artifacts, exhibits and testimonies of the First World War. The exhibition in Medumi is being created and will be opened in February 2023.

Important! Since it is the cross-border route and crosses the territory of both Latvia and Lithuania, we remind you that each person must have an identity document, passport or ID card.

The creation of the cycling route was realized within the framework of the project LLI-501 of the cross-border program of Latvia and Lithuania “Pirmā pasaules kara mantojuma tūrisma maršruta un ekspozīcijas izveide ar mērķi piesaistīt apmeklētājus pierobežas zonā”.

Svente lake with its surrounding territory forms the nature park “Svente”, which, in its turn, belongs to the protected landscape area “Augšzeme”. Along the route, you can enjoy the picturesque landscape and see the renovated Svente manor, which currently has a hotel and a restaurant, the Museum of Military Vehicles, the Jaunsvente manor park, stop and walk along the Svente lake promenade and the forest trail “Egļukalns”, which delights everyone with ravines, moss-covered boulders, mighty oaks and trenches of World War I. After a successful trip, it is possible to enjoy the culinary heritage of Latgale in the adjacent cafe – bakery “Rudzupuķes”, while the nearby guest houses “Sventes rasa”, “Saules nams”, “Ezermala”, “Pakrasti”, “Pumpuri” offer not only accommodation, but also a wide range of recreational opportunities (bath, boat, bicycle and catamaran rental, fishing, etc.).

The total length of the route is about 27 km. There are gravel and dirt roads everywhere. Attention should be paid to the fact that the quality of gravel roads can change depending on weather conditions and road maintenance intensity. There are many accommodation opportunities along the route and nearby it.

The route is suited to active boaters who love long boat trips and enjoy discovering interesting nature, cultural and historical monuments. Because of high waves during windy time, the route is not suitable for boaters with little or no experience. The route will not fit to lazy ones as it requires strength and strenuous physical efforts.

As the bends of the river Daugava rather frequently change the flow direction, you must be ready to face counter wind (north, south and west winds). In such situations it is recommended to sail leeside, closer to the shore from which the wind blows. Before or after the trip tourists are welcome to visit tourism sights in Daugavpils or elsewhere along the banks of the river invisible from the boat.

Route course: Slutišķi – Daugavpils – Līksna – Nīcgale. The route described above is located in Daugavpils district.

Type of boat. A canoe or kayak boat is recommended, which is faster and easier to manoeuvre in case of windbreaks. Inflatable boat or raft also can be used however it may be difficult to manoeuvre even in insignificant crosswind. The route can be completed also with a bigger row boat.

Recommended time. The best time for completing the boat route is June to August. However, if the weather is appropriate, trip can be completed also earlier or later, e.g., in autumn when leaves change colour.

Length: ~ 74 km. The route can be extended till Līvāni (+ ~ 30 km) or Jēkabpils (+ ~ 57 km). The route also can be started already from Krāslava (+ 30 km) or near Koškovci (+ 63 km) village situated near the border between Latvia and Belarus.

Time. For canoe or kayak type boats the route takes 3-4 days.

Length of the first part of the route “Slutišķi – Daugavpils” – 38 km. Length of the second part of the route “Daugavpils – Nīcgale” – 36 km.

Time spent for the trip depends on various factors – boat type, number of boaters per boat, their physical fitness, direction and strength of wind, water level, stream speed, purpose of the trip (recreation, sporting activities, fishing etc.) and time spent on tourist attractions.

Degree of difficulty. The route can be defined as a moderate difficulty route, if it is completed in 3 days and in case of favourable weather conditions (with no wind or counter wind up to 3 m/s). However, having hardly manageable boat and unfavourable weather conditions (strong counter wind) make the route hard to complete.

Start point: Slutišķi, between Putāni brook and Slutišķi village on the right bank of the river – a place with a pontoon for boarding and docking.

End point: Boat deck in Nīcgale, 0,1 km from catholic church in Nīcgale. Steep shore must be taken into account as boats will have to be carried up the hill. On top of the shore there is a drivable road.

Logistics and public transportation. Although bus services are available near the start and end points, it is more convenient to use local boat rental facilities (boat transfer, passenger transportation to personal vehicles, accommodation) or use private means of transport.

Recreation places for nautical tourists. Between Slutišķi and Daugavpils there are several well-equipped (in Slutišķi and Vasargelišķi, near Dinaburg castle mound) and some not fully equipped boat docks. Between Daugavpils and Nīcgale, however, there is only one well-equipped dock on the left bank of the river near Svente and Pilskalne parish boarders just in front of Ilūkste town. Sandblasts on the banks of the river or islands can be used for short time rest. Availability of sandblasts and islands is highly dependent on the level of water in the river, therefore summer and time with no significant rainfall is more appropriate for boating.

Information. All valuable items including maps, information materials and navigation equipment must be packed in waterproof covers before the trip. Tourism information materials and maps are available at Daugavpils Tourist Information Centre.

Distance from Rīga:

– Slutišķi – 248 km

– Nīcgale – 194 km

Please, pay attention to safe boating tips!

Check the current day weather forecast before starting the trip. Don’t start the trip unless favourable weather conditions are expected as the weather is highly dependent on wind direction and strength on Daugava river.

If the wind speed exceeds 4 to 5 m/s, river waves may be dangerous to canoe type boats as boats may be overturned.

There is a strong stream in the river Daugava especially in spring and after heavy rain. Do not overestimate your skills!

Make sure you always wear a life vest, even if the boat is close to the bank of the river. Daugava has very unequal bed level especially between Slutišķi and Daugavpils, where shallow places are often changed by deep places and little river rapids.

Beware of underwater objects such as stones, tree branches, fishing nets etc.

Respect fishermen! Try not to scare fish.

Evaluate whether this route is suitable for travelling with young children.

Do not cross the river Daugava unless conditions are suitable for that.

Take care of your and your peers ‘health and safety! Everyone is responsible for their own their peers ‘safety. Emergency phone number: 112.

The first Catholic church was built in Viski in 1621 on means of Andrew and Elizabeth Mols, the next – in 1715, and the new church was erected in the period from 1908 to 1925. The birth of Mols is known not only in Latvia, but also in Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Great Britain and Argentina.
6. Castle in Chervonka
Chervonka, Vecsaliene parish, Augsdaugava region. Tel. +371 65475870, parvalde@vecsaliena.lv
The castle in Chervonka was built in 1870 in the neo-gothic style and was located in a bend of the park, which was created in the 19th century. This picturesque building with a dynamic and complex composition of the volume is a real fairy-tale castle. The building is covered with a steep span roof. The risalits, the mezzanines and the tower increase its plastic. The details are worked out with special carefulness. They are diverse and successfully complete the expressiveness of the space. For example, the window openings are lancet, segment, rectangle and round. Their decoration and arrangement on the façade also vary. The estate belonged to the barons von Hahn. The open-planed park of 3 ha with 14 species of exotic trees is located near the castle and the building of the estate.

7. Didrihstein manor house
Laucese, Laucesa parish, Augsdaugava region
It is a former elementary school of Laucesa. The castle and the manor house have remained till today. The manor house was built of red brick with a tower in the neogothic style. There is a yard with a small building of red brick in front of the house. Victoria Plater-Zyberk was the owner of the estate in the early 20th century.

8. Rainis house in Berkenele
Berkenele, Kalkuni parish, Augsdaugava region. Tel. + 371 29272200, berkenele@inbox.lv
Farm in Berkenele, former possession of the barons Felkerzam, it is known due to the parents of Janis Pliekshan (Rainis), Krishjan and Darta Pliekshan, who rented it from 1872 to 1881. Rainis spent his childhood here and the impressions about it are reflected in his poetry, in “sketch notebook of Dagda”. Rainis museum has been opened in the farm in Berkenele since 1965. The manor house was built in the middle of the19th century. The house of Janis Rainis offers: a tour of an exposition “Rainis and Berkenele”, a tour of an exhibition of regional applied art, exhibitions of professional art, thematic excursions for groups of different age. There is a place for tents. Rent of fireplace hall, bed places.

9. Place of Liksna manor
Liksna, Liksna parish, Augsdaugava region
The original name of the estate: Lichten. Liksna manor was built in the style of Baroque by the voivode count J. Plater-Zyberk in 1770, but it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the middle of the 19th century. The main building burned down in 1861 and was restored according to the project of Daugavpils architect A. Neimann in the period from 1878 till 1880. The main building was located on a steep slope of the right bank of the river Daugava, at the foot of which flows the river Liksna, which flows into the river Daugava after half of a kilometer. The estate has been partially preserved, but the main building was completely destroyed during World War I. You can see only partially preserved fragments of the ruins now.

10. Building of estate in Vabole
Vabole, Vabole parish, Augsdaugava region
Count Boleslaw Plater-Zyberk began the building of the manor in the early 19th century. A barn, the manager’s house and the stables have remained till nowadays. The shed is interesting for its massive forms, the door wings that are typical for Latgalian pediments. The manager’s house is a modest wooden building, located at the same level as the barn. In 1947 there was a school in the stables. But in 1999 the building was reconstructed. The new garret, made of a red brick, clearly stands out against a background of windows.

The ancestors of Plater family arrived to the Baltic with crusaders. After settlement in Latgale they assimilated and adopted Polish culture developing family ties with Zyberk family. Earls Plater-Zyberk became one of the most notable and powerful families in Latgale. Their property was situated not only in Latgale, Vidzeme and Kurzeme, but also in Poland and Lithuania. Earls Plater-Zyberk financed the building of several manor houses, castles, churches, parks that have been preserved up to nowadays on the territory of Daugavpils and Ilukste regions. This contribution of Earls Plater-Zyberk is an integral part of culture historical heritage, as well as significant sightseeing objects that give unforgettable impression during a trip.
