Bruno Jansons

Bruno Jansons

Teacher, lecturer (1932-2003). He was born on September 9, 1932 in Dobele district Penkule parish. His school education he started in the same place, in Penkule Elementary school (1940-1946) and continued in Dobele High School (1946-1950). In 1956 he graduated from the University of Latvia, the Faculty of Geography and returned to his native region, where he worked for 9 years: as a teacher in Dobele Elementary School (1956-1957), a teacher in Dobele Secondary School Nr.1 (1957-1958), a supervisor in Dobele District Schools (1958-1961) and a director in Dobele Secondary School Nr.1 (1961-1965).

Since 1965 the life of Bruno Jansons was closely connected with the Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute (DPI), which later on, when B. Jansons became a rector, became the Daugavpils Pedagogical University. In realization of ideas B. Jansons contributed a lot of work and perseverance, being sure about the importance of a given step. In 1993 the first Constitution of the Daugavpils Pedagogical University was accepted, as well as development prospects of the university, in which it was provided, that the university should prepare not only teachers, but also science and study centers in other areas. He had a remarkable ability to predict future development of higher education. It was also based on experience of the previous professions, working as a chief of production practices of DPI (1965-1970), a chief of Learning Section (1971-1973), a pro-rector of the Correspondence Department (1973-1991), a rector, associate professor of the Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute (1992-1993) – the Daugavpils Pedagogical University (1993-1998).

The scientific research of B. Jansons focused on environmental education and pedagogical issues, about which the thesis was defensed, about 60 publications were written. However, the greatest love has been the work of regional studies: investigation of springs of Augšdaugava, the nature park “Daugavas loki”, Daugavpils hydrographic system, etc., that cooperated not only with people from the region, but also with colleagues from Sweden, USA etc. He contributed a lot to the creation of the  “Pilskalnes Siguldiņa”, nature park “Daugavas loki”, Adamovas taka.

The work of Bruno Jansons was evaluated. For the work of the region’s cultural maintenance, cleaning environment in 1993 he received the Latvian Culture Foundation Annual Awards, as well as in 1997 for the contribution to the development of the Latvian culture was awarded the Order of the Three Stars of the 4th degree.

He died on October 10, 2003, buried in Dobele district in the Penkule Cemetery.
